Mission Statement

Boston Community Pediatrics (BCP) the first nonprofit, pediatric private practice of its kind in Massachusetts. Our mission is to bring equity to pediatric healthcare by giving all patients - including those on MassHealth - direct access to their primary care provider, as well as to comprehensive prevention-oriented medical care, case management services, and integrated behavioral health services. All patients will receive the kind of personalized care currently only available to those with private insurance. We know that parents and caregivers are experts in their own children. We will leverage our asset-based, relationship-driven approach to improve health outcomes, and lower health care costs for all pediatric patients, regardless of socioeconomic status or background.

About This Cause

Boston Community Pediatrics (BCP) is the first nonprofit pediatric private practice in Massachusetts. BCP is bringing income and racial equity to pediatric healthcare by providing all families with comprehensive, high-quality, culturally competent care that puts the patient at the forefront of its delivery model, regardless of their insurance coverage or ability to pay. BCP has three main goals: 1) Ensure Boston’s children have access to the highest quality pediatric health care; 2) Increase access to, and reduce the stigma of, mental health care; and 3) Address social determinants of health through comprehensive, relationship-driven care and resource navigation. To address this, healthcare settings must see all types of health intertwined with one another. While many people in healthcare are talking about the social determinants of health, BCP has actually implemented a racially and culturally-responsive model that views health as intersectional. The medical team at BCP, all of whom speak Spanish, has over 40 years of combined experience in working with high-risk populations with low-income. BCP provides same day appointments, telehealth appointments, as well as access to providers by telephone and email. In order to provide easier access to healthcare, BCP offers evening and weekend appointments, so that parents aren’t forced to choose between taking their child to the doctor and taking time off of work. Centering patients, families, and their lived experiences in every aspect of the practice is one of BCP’s core values. The majority of our patients and staff identify as Latinx, providing a cultural and linguistic concordance so frequently missing in healthcare. BCP knows that vulnerable families have multiple competing priorities, and that its approach must include proactive outreach and the minimization of barriers to care whenever possible. To that end, BCP has a robust care navigation team that works closely with families with the highest needs. BCP often UBERs patients to appointments, makes follow up calls to COVID positive patients to see if they need food or other necessities, and offers COVID vaccine counseling over the phone as well as in the office. Since opening its doors in November of 2020, the BCP team has seen patients for their well child visits, sick visits, delivered groceries, airlifted a sick child from Guatemala, bought car seats and bike helmets, paid patients’ utility bills, provided COVID testing and vaccines with extensive, individualized counseling, hosted healthy cooking classes, and led science workshops, art classes, and more! In addition to addressing patients’ social determinants of health, BCP has an integrated behavioral health model that works. BCP’s bi-lingual, bi-cultural team reimagined the traditional model and designed and implemented a new way of providing mental health services that centers patients' needs. BCP not only has a fully-integrated, full-time mental health clinician, but also has a pediatric and adolescent psychiatrist who sees patients weekly in collaboration with BCP’s medical providers, and provides consultation to the medical team. BCP’s team works collaboratively with parents and patients, and BCP’s medical providers attend part of every mental health session to ensure continuity. With BCP’s integrated behavioral health model, patients find one home for both their medical and mental health care. BCP’s model allows its mental health clinicians to work hand-in-hand with medical providers in an innovative way that eliminates barriers and decreases stigma. This model is shifting the paradigm for families by eliminating stigma as well as barriers to the utilization of mental health services.
