Mission Statement
Established in 2019 in the Hudson Valley, Interlude Artist Residency is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting a flourishing practice for artists who are actively parenting. Interlude provides residency stays and professional development tailored to the unique needs of these artists.
About This Cause
We started Interlude Artist Residency because we felt firsthand how hard it is to advance a career in the arts while raising a family. We saw how few residency programs welcome and support parent artists. This means that residencies are nearly closed off to young parents who cannot drop everything to attend. This problem hits women artists especially hard and has only gotten worse as COVID heaps new obligations on working families. What’s at stake is an arts community that’s inclusive of all voices. Residencies matter. They are building blocks for a career in the arts, serve as marks of excellence, and build bridges to further opportunities. They give artists the space to experiment, research, and make work outside of home routines. Many artists credit their time at a residency as a career turning point. We are offering the first residency program designed exclusively for parent artists. The goal is to meet artists where they are; they can come alone or with their families. We provide month long stays with biweekly family-style meals, child-friendly accommodations, and studio visits with incredible local artists. We also provide a stipend to every artist to defray their cost of travel, material, or childcare. We need your help to make this work. We are a fledgling nonprofit and our program will not be sustainable unless we can build a broader financial base. If you believe in this vision, please join us. 100% of your donation goes directly to the artists through the stipend program, which we are trying to increase to more meaningfully cover childcare costs.
