Mission Statement
The Multicultural Development Center of Iowa’s mission is to empower a diverse and inclusive community through strategic programs that address the Digital Divide, wealth gaps, racial equity, and socioeconomic barriers that limit or prevent historically disadvantaged and marginalized people from pursuing entrepreneurship or a degree/career pathway in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
About This Cause
MDC Iowa Iowa serves communities in Eastern and Central Iowa through four main initiatives: STEM Factory - hands-on, project-based learning for youth and adults to improve access to STEM through focused outreach to help create a degree or career pathway for Iowans in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. INCUBATE – a business accelerator that provides an intensive 12-week training program and technical assistance designed to accelerate the growth and development of small businesses in Iowa. This economic development program is supported by local community partners including the city, county, regional financial institutions, and area economic development groups that assist interstate commerce companies with location or expansion projects, and workforce development. This collaborative network provides services and support for program participants and helps facilitate growth through improved access to resources. MDCI Connect - a next-gen mentoring program built on a technology platform with a completely revamped approach to matching industry professionals with small business owners, 1st gen college students, 2nd stage career candidates, and students that could benefit from a mentor. INNOV8 Lab – A community-based makerspace that focuses on a collaborative environment for making, learning, exploring, and innovating through high-tech, low-tech, or no-tech tools to increase creative confidence. This space is open to kids, adults, and entrepreneurs and has a variety of maker equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, soldering irons, heat presses for vinyl transfers, screen printing equipment, and sewing machines.
