Mission Statement

The mission of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children is to provide quality pediatric services in a caring, progressive environment.

About This Cause

St. Christopher’s is a full-service, free-standing 188-bed pediatric hospital, providing a full-range of quality healthcare services to children and youth up to age 21. St. Christopher’s provides patients with specialized trained providers and staff, as well as pediatric equipment not typically available in adult hospitals. Over 220 pediatric experts are available. Many have received accolades; some are world-renowned. Annually St. Christopher’s provides care for 63,000 children in its Emergency Department and primary care to 30,000 children, while expanding its geographic footprint with specialty satellites in eastern Pennsylvania. St. Christopher’s is one of only three Level I Pediatric Trauma Centers in Pennsylvania, treating 900 trauma patients annually, addressing acute needs of regional patients as well as those from hospitals as far-flung as Boston and Washington, DC. St. Christopher’s has the 11th largest Children’s Hospital Graduate Medical Education training program in the nation. For the local economy, St. Christopher’s provides a wide range of jobs. Some focused programs include: ---Two certified lactation consultants providing breastfeeding support to patients and families in the St. Christopher’s community. ---A program for children in foster care and those experiencing physical or sexual abuse and neglect. ---Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs---a comprehensive medical home providing care and services to 3,000 children and youth with medical complexity and disabilities. This includes comprehensive medical care coordination, multidisciplinary programs like a Down Syndrome Program, Prader-Willi Program, Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder program, and a primary care program for graduates of the neonatal intensive care unit and their families. ---Marian Anderson Sickle Cell Center.---Named after a monumental Philadelphia native, this world-renowned treatment center is equipped with specialist psychologists, researchers, nurses, doctors, and social workers. In 2009, federal funding was cut to the 10 Sickle Cell Treatment Centers. Programs and jobs were lost, but St. Christopher’s remains committed to offering essential services for this population. ---Cystic Fibrosis Center.---In 1959, St. Christopher’s opened the largest cystic fibrosis center for children on the East Coast, and important work, including research, continues here. ---Spina Bifida Program.--- One of only ten spina bifida health care resources in Pennsylvania, St. Christopher’s offers comprehensive care and support to children and families and a centralized approach. Often these patients need to see many specialists, and the hospital can provide that in one setting. ---The Dorothy Mann Center for Child and Adolescent HIV.---The Center provides comprehensive care for pediatric and adolescent patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as for their affected family members. A close association exists between poverty and HIV/AIDS (average income falling by as much as 60% when a family member has AIDS), which can result in food consumption dropping as much as 41%, children dropping out of school, and other extreme challenges.
