Mission Statement
Watts Community Core is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community of Nickerson Gardens, Watts, and leaving a lasting impact in SouthLA. We are for the community and grow by UNITY. We envision a place where the youth, young adults, and families in Nickson can discover their purpose while developing their talents with the help of top industry and business professionals. We desire to create a safe culture where youth and families in Nickerson Gardens, Watts have the opportunity to be set up for long-term success. Our current Covid-19 emergency food relief has enabled us to connect, build relationships, and serve the community, allowing us to always put them first. We hope to create a new legacy and future with the residents of Nickerson Gardens through holistic youth programming, positive recreation, dignified employment, and community empowerment. Watts is Rising! Watts Community Core was started 1yr & 4 months ago in response to a growing need for safe activities for youth residing in Nickerson Gardens. Nickerson Gardens is a 1,066-unit public housing apartment complex in Watts. area of Los Angeles is infamous for gang violence. Youth in the neighborhood needed mentorship, positive role models, a safe space to play. The Boys & Girls Club in the community currently does not have programs available to youth in the evening. This is the most critical time that youth need a positive outlet to engage themselves. In response to this need, Watts Community Core began to offer boxing and basketball programs. They have since expanding to also have STEM and support to students with special needs. Watts Community Core is targeting youth ages 13-20 years old. Many of these youth are already gang-affiliated. Currently there are 50 youth that are participating in the boxing program which runs Monday-Friday in the recreation center. They are in need of more equipment and supplies to truly address the needs of the children. The goal of the program is to not only ensure that participants stay out of trouble in and outside of school and to learn skills that will enable them to excel in the arena and life. Discipline, dedication, hard work, perseverance, etc. are all skills that youth will develop through the program. Most importantly, they will have mentors and guides to help them avoid or disengage from the gangs in the community. The founders of Watts Community Core want to ensure that all the youth in Nickerson Gardens have the opportunity to realize their dreams. To do this, they need programs and opportunities to engage with so that they can stay out of trouble. Youth in the program will be required to attend school, share their report cards, and inform the coaches of any issues or behavior problems at school. With positive support and coaching in the program, the goal is to see grades improve, behavior infraction reduced, and gang involvement stopped. These goals will be tracked and measured during the course of the program to evaluate the program’s impact. This program is the most effective and sustainable solution for the challenges facing youth in Nickerson Gardens because it is started and led by residents from the community who have lived there their entire lives. They seek to pass down the lessons they learned to younger generations and help them avoid some of the mistakes and pitfalls they experienced.
About This Cause
S.T.R.E.A.M. curriculum. We plan to increase Covid testing in the community and ensure that each household has access to masks, PPE, hygiene kits and nutrition that will mitigate the Coronavirus from spreading and will protect individuals from getting Covid-19. One initiative to support these efforts is we are going to be revitalizing our community garden to increase direct access to nourishing foods for the community, grown by the community. Youth will have a chance to learn about gardening and feel empowered to bring plants and food home to their families. Our team will begin to strategize how to create jobs in the community and partner with other organizations to rapidly develop solutions to the unemployment crisis. While we have big visions, we will be strategic and utilize our qualified volunteer network to execute our proposed new programming and Covid-19 2021 relief. With an extensive network of business connections, university partnerships, and relationships, we will work tirelessly to advance and support the Nickerson Gardens for years to come. Nickerson Gardens. We will use the funds raised to continue providing free food, clothing, cleaning supplies, hygiene kits, and other necessities for families. We will also further expand our S.T.R.E.A.M programming as youth are even more at risk to Covid-19 and gang violence, without regular school programming and support. We will use the capital to build out future programming (food relief and S.T.R.E.A.M) and adjust to the local community needs over the next year. One of our focus areas will be improving our website / social media platforms and investing in advertising and promotions to create awareness of our programs within the community and the city at large.
