About This Cause

The TASTY Kids' Summer Food Program provides healthful and nutritious food for breakfast and lunch to low-income families whose children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year. We have expanded our outreach to the Chewelah, Valley, and Summit Valley School Districts. In addition, we provide vouchers to obtain fresh produce from the local farmer’s market which they likely haven’t tried previously. Food is boxed and parents pick it up five times, every two weeks, after summer school ends. We know this helps families financially during the summer and hope it also transforms eating habits of the entire family. The TASTY Program is coordinated through the Chewelah Faith Resources Group, an ecumenical ministry, which partners churches with service agencies to address important community needs. Volunteers from local churches and other community members load boxes with food items. We give the children an opportunity to experience food that is low in sodium, saturated fat, refined grains and added sugars. We include fresh vegetables and fruits, dairy products, and bread and cereal made with whole grains. We have partnered with our excellent Chewelah Farmer's Market by providing vouchers to families so their children can select fresh fruits and vegetables.
