Mission Statement

Thrive empowers people who can’t afford healthy food to grow their own—in abundance. We train and equip individuals and communities living in poverty to create sustainable, organic gardens for nutrition and income generation.

About This Cause

Hidden hunger affects 4 out of 10 people worldwide, trapping them in cycles of illness and poverty. Thrive for Good empowers communities to break free from these cycles by teaching and equipping them to grow an abundance of organic food sustainably. We call the agricultural projects “Life Gardens” because they provide a foundation for flourishing. Gardens give people security, health, income, and a future. Our solution is simple: We help people to grow their own nutritious food sustainably. Thrive provides training, simple tools, and starter seeds, the essentials for growing healthy, disease-fighting foods for a lifetime cost of only US $15 per person. The outcomes are transformative. Families get ahead. Children flourish and reach their potential. People have hope for a better future. When people grow their own nutritious food, they thrive! The benefits of Thrive for Good gardens are transformative: - Health: Communities growing Life Gardens see an average 75% reduction in malaria (a top cause of child mortality) - Income: Community members miss fewer days of work because they are stronger and healthier. Thrive also trains people to generate income by selling the surplus from their harvests. - Savings: With nutrition from Life Gardens, community members spend less on out-of-pocket medical expenses and food. They are shown how to ‘bank’ the savings and use them to sustain and expand their garden. - Child development: Well-nourished children can attend school and get the nutrients they need to grow and develop. - Security: When people have the security that comes from growing their own nutritious food, they have stability and can work toward a brighter future. - Empowerment: When people create Life Gardens to feed their communities and families, they realize their own potential. They have the confidence and skills to take on more challenges and make more meaningful changes. Thrive focuses on those living in extreme poverty—anyone challenged to meet basic human needs, including the need for food security and nutrition. Thrive for Good has worked with… - Residents of refugee camps - Communities of single mothers and pregnant teenage girls - Communities of people with disabilities and seniors - Prison populations - Children and teachers in schools and orphanages - Communities with HIV/AIDS - Youth groups - Churches Thrive projects are inclusive. We work with people who are ready to change by working with us to create Life Gardens. Thrive for Good’s focus is concentrated in Africa and South Asia, where the largest populations live in extreme poverty. In these regions, the growing season allows us to produce food year-round. Every area has unique challenges to growing, but Thrive can set up gardens anywhere land, sun, and water are available. - 100 square feet of land (the size of a small bedroom) per person - 6 hours of daily sunlight - Minimum required rainfall (500 mm/20 inches a year) Thrive for Good projects are fast to start, too, so they can be established in areas where food shortages are anticipated. It takes just three months to develop flourishing gardens. Thrive for Good partners with not-for-profit and governmental organizations to expand our impact. Through these partnerships, we tap into existing networks and communities. Thrive for Good helps our partners achieve their missions by bringing health and food security to the people they serve. Thrive for Good has created a transformative model for addressing extreme poverty. We developed and tested this approach by working closely with the people we have served since 2008. The Thrive for Good model is: - Holistic: It brings together sustainable food production, nutrition education, sanitation, natural health, and economic empowerment. - Efficient: Thrive projects maximize land and water use and create a “closed loop” by harvesting seeds and turning plant waste into compost to regenerate the soil. - Grassroots: Thrive projects are led locally and sustained independently by communities. These initiatives build local skills, knowledge, agency, prosperity, and connections between people. - Scalable: Life Gardens can be implemented by groups of any size, from families to large communities and organizations. - Regenerative: Thrive’s organic gardens enrich the soil, prevent erosion, contribute to biodiversity, and capture more carbon. - Sustainable: Thrive projects empower people to change their own lives without ongoing donations. - Inclusive: Thrive works with people who are ready to change their lives, and we welcome all who are willing to do so. - Low-Cost: Life Gardens are a very low-cost solution to food security and nutrition. From our founding, Thrive for Good has committed to a bold promise: 100% of your donations go directly to funding programs and operations. Donations cover training, seeds, and basic materials for community gardens. Every donation is spent in the communities where Thrive works. We can deliver on this radical commitment because Thrive keeps overhead costs low. We are grateful to a few major donors and to Natural Calm Canada and Bolton’s Naturals, Canadian social enterprises that donate 100% of their profits to cover Thrive for Good salaries, marketing, fundraising, and administrative costs in Canada. Every USD $15 donated provides the training, seeds, and simple tools needed for one person to grow organic, nutritious food for a lifetime. Let’s break that down… A typical Thrive Life Garden consists of approximately 50 garden beds on ¼ acres. (That’s the size of about four tennis courts.) It’s managed by 20 people and on average, can feed between 50-70 people daily. Here’s what Thrive invests (in USD) in each Life Garden: - $250 start-up costs for supplies, seeds, and tools needed to prepare and plant the gardens, and care for the crops. - $225 initial training of the community members through practical workshops and visits by a Thrive trainer. - $275 ongoing training for the entire year, including topics on table banking and income generation that help the community work towards sustainability. The total cost for one Life Garden is $750. Per person, it costs just $15 to change a life.
