Mission Statement
The Women’s Foundation of the South centers and invests in the collective power, health, wellbeing, economic security and leadership of womxn and girls of color in the South.
About This Cause
The Women’s Foundation of the South (WFS) is a new philanthropic entity that centers and invests in the collective power, health, well-being, economic security, and leadership of womxn and girls of color in the American South. (Please note we use the term “womxn” to avoid perceived sexism and explicitly include and welcome transgender and nonbinary people.) WFS aims to be a permanent, endowed grantmaker that serves as a gateway for donors, foundations, corporations, and individual investors to maximize the social impact of their investments in the South. WFS was created to shift the focus in philanthropy to focus specifically on womxn and girls of color, valuing them as inherent leaders and problem solvers who deserve to be trusted and well-resourced to ensure that they can determine their own destinies and that they and their families thrive. WFS intends to disrupt legacy philanthropy in the South by addressing racial and gender equity from the start. It is led by womxn of color and explicitly serves womxn and girls of color, including trans womxn and gender nonconforming people. Our base of founders brings to bear more than 100 years of combined experience in philanthropy. We have worked tirelessly in local, regional, and national philanthropic institutions as c-suite leaders, program officers, and philanthropic advisors to make the changes we know are needed. We are joined by an advisory group of Latinx, Muslim, trans people, and allies from fields including public health, law, policy, finance, organizing, and business. We are all painfully aware that womxn and girls of color cannot wait for incremental change, especially given the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the health, safety, and economic security of womxn of color. It's time to invest heavily in womxn and girls of color, and we believe a permanent philanthropic institution led by – and committed to – womxn of color in the South is the place to do it. Women’s Foundation of the South will make strategic investments resulting in the growth of generational wealth, improved health outcomes, and more prominent leadership among womxn of color across the South.
