Mission Statement

Beyond the Cell is a transformative program dedicated to educating and empowering incarcerated women. Beyond the Cell aims to heal the scars of trauma, stigma, bullying, social isolation, and exclusion by employing specific education strategies supported by neuroscience. Participants connect with themselves and their community, building a bridge to greater self-awareness and metacognition to understand oneself and others. Insights from guided meditation, neuroscience, literature, and creative writing bring forth healing and redemption.

About This Cause

Guided Meditation - Transform your mind. Our practice of guided meditation develops greater self-awareness, cultivates positive neural patterns, and increases compassion. Neuroscience - Understand your mind. We teach foundational neuroscience – including neuroanatomy, behavior, and emotional conditioning – to assist participants in understanding their experiences and reactions. Creative Writing - Express your mind. Creative writing offers a path to healing through story-telling and self-expression by connecting one's voice with their imagination. Beyond the Cell is proudly funded by: The Milton & Rosalind Chang Career Exploration Prize. The Chang Prize was established by Milton Chang (PhD ’69) — a Caltech Distinguished Alumnus and senior trustee — and his wife, Rosalind, to provide recent alumni with the freedom to explore careers outside of academia and build their skills as leaders and advocates. The Chang Prize awards funding to each recipient to support them and their work on a career exploration project.
