Mission Statement
The Prospect KC's mission is to address food apartheid—a system of inequitable food access rooted in racism and oppression—by providing programs and services that remove barriers to personal achievement and sustained economic mobility. Through initiatives focused on food access, nutrition literacy, and culinary job training, The Prospect KC empowers individuals to break the cycle of generational poverty, fostering healthier lives and stronger communities.
About This Cause
The Prospect KC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2019 by Chef Shanita McAfee-Bryant. Located in Kansas City, we tackle food apartheid by delivering programs that enhance food access, promote nutrition literacy, and provide hands-on culinary job training. Our efforts include distributing healthy meals through initiatives like Operation Meatball and Soup-Scription, running a 16-week culinary training program, and operating "The Spot," a café, coffee shop, and fresh grocer open to the public. With a mission rooted in dismantling systemic barriers, The Prospect KC works to create sustainable economic mobility, supporting individuals and communities on their journey toward equity and opportunity.
