Mission Statement

Our mission is to rebuild communities from the inside out with a comprehensive faith-based program designed to improve and enrich the lives of urban youth and families.

About This Cause

The Lighthouse4students In-School and After-School Mentoring Program believe that every student can achieve their potential in a society that is defined by character, respect, integrity, responsibility, self-control, and excellence. Education is the most reliable route out of poverty and a critical pathway toward healthier, more productive students. Lighthouse4Students is a Faith-Based Extended Educational Program designed to address the risk factors in our communities through mentoring and tutoring in a safe environment. As President of Lighthouse4students, I have been concerned about the short- and longer-term impacts of the pandemic on our children. There’s been much speculation about how shuttered schools and interrupted learning may have affected students’ opportunities to learn. Broward County Public Schools has documented the pandemic’s toll on education in other ways, including increases in students seeking mental health services, absenteeism, school violence/disruption, cyberbullying, and a lack of interest in education. Low math and reading scores have unintended consequences and have long-term outcomes affecting a student’s economic and social position later in life. A short drive across the tracks into the surrounding community reveals what is happening with our students. As we dug deeper we found that the neediest students in our communities, do not have the life skills for jobs in the 21st century. 80 percent of the fastest-growing jobs in America require an educational skill set beyond High School. Although L4S has had some successes with nine out of ten students enrolled in our program improving their reading and math scores by 10 to 15 percent. The 2022 report from the National Center for Education Statistics reports that mathematics scores for white students declined by five points, 13 points for Black students, and 8 points for Hispanic students. This is the largest average score decline in reading since 1990 and the first-ever largest decline in mathematics. This is having a devasting effect on our communities and our Country. As a society, we must all put some skin in the game if we are going to make a difference.
