Mission Statement

NCCS’ mission is to advocate for quality cancer care for all people touched by cancer. NCCS created the widely accepted definition of survivorship and defines someone as a cancer survivor from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life. NCCS has worked with legislators and policy makers to represent cancer patients and survivors in efforts to improve their quality of care and quality of life after diagnosis. Our unique niche in the cancer advocacy landscape is promoting policy change to ensure quality cancer care. Our vision is to be an advocacy organization that reflects the needs of all cancer survivors to effect policy change at the national level.

About This Cause

Founded by and for cancer survivors, the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) advocates for quality cancer care for all people touched by cancer. With advances in cancer research, more than 18 million Americans are cancer survivors. Unfortunately, cancer does not end when treatment ends – survivors live with long-term physical, emotional, and financial concerns. Over 37 years ago, NCCS pioneered the concept of survivorship, living well during and after cancer treatment. NCCS empowers cancer survivors to advocate for themselves. We train and support cancer survivors and caregivers to advocate for better care in their communities. And we advocate for policy change at the national level to address the needs of cancer survivors. NCCS conducts an annual nationwide State of Survivorship Survey to understand the cancer survivor journey, and we use the data to inform our programs and policy activities. In addition, we share the survey data with patients, health care providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Cancer survivors continue to face significant disparities in their cancer care experience, with disproportionately negative experiences among people of color, young adults, women, and individuals with metastatic cancer. Not all who receive a cancer diagnosis feel informed about their treatment and side effects or are empowered to be active in their care. NCCS WORKS TO Improve the Health Care System by representing the needs of cancer survivors in public policy, research, and health care delivery. For example, NCCS was instrumental in the introduction of the Comprehensive Cancer Survivorship Act in June 2023. This new comprehensive survivorship legislation will directly benefit cancer survivors. The legislation addresses the entire continuum of care, closing many of the gaps patients face so they may no longer feel “lost in transition.” Passage of the Comprehensive Cancer Survivorship Act is a top priority for NCCS in 2023 -2024. Empower Patients, Caregivers, and Survivors to be active participants in their cancer care and to advocate for themselves. NCCS works with over 1,000 Cancer Policy and Advocacy Team (CPAT) members in their engagement in public policy advocacy. NCCS hosts webinars, conferences, online forums, and monthly newsletters to provide advocates with multiple ways to learn and engage in advocacy. CPAT members take the skills they learn and implement them in their advocacy efforts at the local and national levels. Support Providers to improve cancer care delivery, so cancer survivors receive the support they need during and after treatment. As cancer treatments improve, more people are living with a history of cancer and the long-term effects of cancer treatment. NCCS’s Survivorship Champions community is a multi-directional information exchange about best practices, lessons learned, and effective models of survivorship care. NCCS was instrumental in creating the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Cancer Survivorship to encourage survivorship research. NCCS’s annual State of Survivorship Survey influences health care providers’ and policymakers’ work. With your help, we envision a health care system that cares for the whole person with cancer from diagnosis through end of life, ensures equity in health care delivery and outcomes, empowers cancer survivors to be active participants in their cancer care, and supports caregivers and family members. Your support is more critical than ever. It will allow us to meet the growing demand for our programs, keep them free of charge for those we serve, and work with policymakers on legislation to address the entire survivorship continuum of care.
