The food pantry is a judgment free space that is open to the public, run by a core staff and returning volunteers, and prioritizes participant input in order to make a beneficial, community based resource especially aimed at relinquishing veteran, youth, and formerly incarcerated Philadelphians’ hunger. Services will be open to all The MLJ Foundation Food Pantry will be an appendage of the MLJ Foundation and the collective resources they offer out of their single operation in North Philadelphia.

About This Cause

Drew Johnson Jr. a previous, longtime resident of North Philadelphia’s Temple Hospital neighborhood is restoring his family’s historical property to its former glory, reinventing it as a community beacon and resource center in honor of his late wife Marcel Lynn Johnson. The large, two story stretch of corner property has long acted as a meeting point for members of the neighborhood. It was first a restaurant named the Polka Dot House, then operated in various forms, affectionately referred to as “The Shop.” The property sits on a busy corner near residential row homes and a private school. It was bought by Andrew Johnson Sr. in 1973 and the structure dates back 125 years, built in 1899. Drew aims to restore the property with the help of the city of Philadelphia, community, and friends, to provide a safe space for neighbors who will benefit from services such as a food pantry, health and wellness classes, job resources, a community meeting room, rooftop garden, and clothing and shoe giveaway.
