Mission Statement
Social Creatures is a nonprofit social innovation nonprofit dedicated to elevating social health—the quality of our relationships and connections—to the same level of importance as physical and mental health. We work to address the public health crisis of social isolation and loneliness by creating inclusive, research-driven programs that foster meaningful connection, reduce isolation, and improve well-being, with a special focus on marginalized communities. We believe that social connection is not just a personal need—it is a fundamental determinant of health. Research shows that loneliness and weak social ties are as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, increasing risks for depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular disease. Yet, despite these urgent realities, our healthcare systems and social structures often fail to prioritize social health in meaningful, actionable ways. Social Creatures exists to change that.
About This Cause
Social Creatures is a nonprofit social innovation nonprofit dedicated to elevating social health—the quality of our relationships and connections—to the same level of importance as physical and mental health. Our work is rooted in a three-pronged approach that integrates program innovation, science communication, and advocacy to create systemic change: Social Innovation Lab – We develop, test, and scale evidence-based programs that create the conditions for social health to thrive. Our programs are designed with and for communities, ensuring they are inclusive, culturally responsive, and accessible. Notable initiatives include: Bonded by Baby – A postpartum mental health and social health program that integrates peer connection with professional guidance to reduce isolation among new parents. SitGrit – A free, seated virtual fitness and social engagement program co-created with individuals with physical disabilities to foster both physical well-being and social belonging. Young Adult Loneliness Initiative – A research-driven project exploring the root causes of loneliness in young adults and developing interventions to improve social connection. Science Communication & Education – We bridge the gap between research and real-world action by translating cutting-edge social health science into engaging, accessible content. Through blogs, workshops, toolkits, and public engagement, we equip individuals, organizations, and policymakers with the knowledge and tools to improve social well-being. Advocacy & Systems Change – We work to embed social health into public health policy, clinical care models, and workplace wellness initiatives. By partnering with healthcare systems, policymakers, and corporate leaders, we push for structural changes that recognize social connection as essential to overall health and drive sustainable, equity-focused solutions. Our Commitment to Equity Social isolation disproportionately affects marginalized communities, including people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, communities of color, young adults, and those facing economic hardship. We prioritize equity in everything we do, ensuring that the solutions we develop are accessible, inclusive, and designed to reach those most impacted. Join Us in Elevating Social Health At Social Creatures, we believe in a world where every person has the relationships and support they need to thrive—and we are committed to making that vision a reality. Through community-driven programs, research translation, and policy advocacy, we are leaders in the growing movement to elevate social health as a core pillar of well-being. We invite you to join us—whether by supporting our work, partnering on initiatives, or advocating for social health in your own community. Together, we can build a more connected, healthier, and more inclusive world.
