Mission Statement
Refugees in Schools provides refugees a hopeful future through education, training, and support.
About This Cause
At Refugees In Schools (RIS) we believe education is a right. We believe refugees should have access to quality training that leads to a job. We believe that refugees and marginalized communities can address the great challenges faced in the world right through education and specialized training. Refugees In Schools was founded by Ann Strandoo in 2020. After working with refugees for more than 25 years with the United Nations and non-profit organizations all over the world Ann decided a more direct, concrete solution to accessing higher education was needed. In our first year, RIS established a partnership with local organization Windle International Kenya to support seven young men from Kakuma refugee camp to attend Eastlands College of Technology in Nairobi. Those seven students are receiving specialized training in one of three vocational training tracts: automotive, computer or electrical technology. Our impact is life changing. These men left a dangerous environment to start a new life filled with hope and purpose. All have shared their intent to use their new technical skills and business management education to return to the refugee camp-or back to their country when it is safe to start local businesses that will support families and communities. All seven students will graduate on time in December! They have completed their second term exams and are preparing for their final internships this August. We are working on their post-graduation plans with community partner organizations that support refugee entrepreneurs. In 2022 we welcomed our second cohort with scholarships for 12 young women in Kenya. These exceptional refugees and local Kenyans beat out several hundred applicants to win scholarships to attend college and obtain degrees in Midwifery, Nutrition and Mental Health Counseling. We expanded our Secondary Scholars program and we are now supporting 8 high school students who had no means to pay the school fees required for them to attend high school.
