Mission Statement
At Sista Afya Community Care, our mission is to build sustainable mental wellness communities through providing affordable and culturally-centered community mental wellness care and education.
About This Cause
Sista Afya Community Care was founded as a response to the mental health inequity impacting the lives of Black women in Chicago. We found that Black woman wanted to receive mental wellness care, but cost was a major barrier. Sista Afya Community Care disrupts mental health inequity by removing cost, centering culture and community in mental wellness care. SACC is the nonprofit arm of the social enterprise Sista Afya Community Mental Wellness, providing free, culturally-centered community mental wellness services for Black women from all walks of life. SACC addresses the health inequities that prevent Black women from receiving mental wellness care in their communities. Our holistic approach engages individuals, communities, and systems-level change. Our three core programs work together to make mental wellness care accessible and achievable for Black women in Chicago – changing the trajectory of their lives for the better. Programs Thrive in Therapy: The Thrive in Therapy provides free holistic community mental wellness care for people experiencing multiple barriers to care. This includes individual therapy, holistic wellness, or psychiatric services with a trained mental wellness professional. Community Care: Community Care provides low-cost workshops and wellness classes where Black women can connect, learn, and support one another with their mental wellness. Developing Mental Wellness Warriors: Developing Mental Wellness Warriors provides low-cost professional development training to local organizations and businesses that focus on supporting people with mental health conditions. This includes Mental Health First Aid trainings and topic-based trainings that are relevant to communities served.
