Mission Statement
We are a nonprofit organization committed to creating and distributing children's books to kids in low resource communities in Guatemala in order to encourage imagination, promote literacy, and increase representation.
About This Cause
Desde Chiquitos is founded on the belief that reading is a magical, wonderful, important part of childhood. Books take us on wild adventures, teach lessons big and small, encourage imagination, and inspire creativity. They challenge, teach, and comfort us. Access to books during childhood also increases literacy–opening the doors to many opportunities. In Guatemala, books are often expensive and inaccessible for many children. Our dream is that Guatemalan kids would have access to children’s books that are written in Spanish and have characters that look like them and live in Guatemala. Our first book is published and being donated to children in Guatemala. This book was dreamed up, written, and illustrated with very specific intentions. To honor and celebrate the incredible children of Guatemala. To be a mirror–reflecting back and allowing Guatemalan children to see themselves, their country, and their culture in literature. To be a window–exposing kids to people, places, and cultures that are different from their own. To provide laughter and joy. To inspire creativity and imagination. To spark a love for reading. There are two ways you can support our work--donating directly to Desde Chiquitos and buying a book for yourself or a young reader in your life. When you buy a book, we are able to give a book directly to a kid in Guatemala. 100% of the profits of all sales are used to bring books to little readers who have minimal or no access to children’s literature. The books are available for purchase in both English and Spanish. We are partnering with orphanages, schools, and community groups to reach those who would most benefit from having a book of their very own.
