Mission Statement
The mission of 300FOR300 is to save lives. We provide a safe "third space" outside of school and home where Middle School girls of Color are empowered to dream and heal while writing their unique stories. We offer creative writing instruction, artistic expression, health and wellness coaching, and a community that focuses on centering joy. This holistic approach to healing racial trauma and pervasive feelings of alienation and self-doubt will allow 300 Colorful Girls to excel and thrive within the Louisville community.
About This Cause
From 2018 to 2021, Black youths ages 10-19 experienced a 78% increase in suicide rates, the largest of any demographic. Since the start of the pandemic, the suicide rate amongst Black girls doubled in comparison to that of Black boys with the rate of suicide for Black Girls rising 50.6 percent higher than the previous year. The suicide rate for Black Girls is the highest of any demographic, male or female, black or white - anywhere. 300FOR300 offers middle school-aged girls of color a nurturing environment that promotes self-expression, leadership development, and mental wellness. Through our programs, 300For300 aims to create positive, sustainable change in the lives of our girls and their communities. This holistic approach to healing racial trauma allows these Colorful Girls to excel, heal, and thrive. The 300FOR300 program is laid out over nine weeks of guided activities, alongside ongoing mental healthcare support, and is comprised of 4 main components: - “Make it Art” - Creative Arts Enrichment and Storytelling: This 6-week intensive includes art-making, writing, movement, and confidence-building taught by professors, creative professionals, and artists. - Leadership Development: This 3-week summit explores the meaning of leadership and builds on the skills learned in the Creative Arts Enrichment intensive. - THRIVE (Therapists Helping Reverse the Impacts of Violence and Emotional trauma): This segment engages trained therapists throughout the program to provide racially- and culturally-informed counseling services. - “When the Light Shines Through”: A VR documentary will capture the stories of 300FOR300 participants from 2020-2027 to broadly share their achievements.
