Mission Statement
"Exploring the Universe to Heal those In It" Reach For The Stars is a pioneering and inclusive nonprofit that harnesses the transformative power of astronomy and STEAM to promote mental health and wellness among children, youth and the community.
About This Cause
RFTS is a free out-of-school program serving youth across Pima county. RFTS provides unique organic programs for youth. The program is meant to be proactive and reactive to the growing crisis of youth and their struggle with mental health by using coping strategies and social emotional empowerment. RFTS uses STEM classes, astronomy exploration & stargazing, food stability, and youth volunteering to reach these goals. The entire purpose of our mission is to build better adults. To teach youth real-life skills including mindfulness, goal setting, positive decision making, creative confidence, STEM, coping strategies, altruism, and how to “want” to avoid risky behaviors that are prevalent among youth within the community. The purpose is for them to leave with lifelong skills that will benefit them into their post high school careers ensuring success and happiness. Youth are struggling, more than ever. Tucson has a higher rate than the National average when it comes to teens wanting to (or planning) suicide, at 22% and growing (Powell, 2021). RFTS has witnessed these issues first-hand by local youth who have stated as such: 46/109 youth confirming they have struggled within the last year with suicidal thoughts (all under the age of 15). Youth with anxiety and depression struggle to finish high school or go to college. The result of these struggles lead to risky behavior, suicide, and poverty as young adults. RFTS envisions building the first-ever Observatory Community and Learning Center where children can come together in a historic space, and every program is uniquely designed to improve their health and well-being. Having your support and kindness means that we could take in more than 12 children at a time. We could provide vital assistance to at least double the amount of children which means less children struggling with suicidal thoughts, anxiety and depression leading to healthier choices and successful, inspirational lives. Our ultimate vision is to build the first-ever Observatory Community and Learning Center where children can come together in a historic space, and every fun program is uniquely designed to improve their mental health and well-being.
