Mission Statement

The International Association of Veterinary Social Work (IAVSW) is an interdisciplinary membership organization that supports and promotes professionals who tend to the human needs that arise in the relationship between humans and animals by creating and maintaining professional standards, encouraging research, and advocacy for a better world for all species.

About This Cause

The International Association of Veterinary Social Work (IAVSW) is a global community rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration. Despite its name, IAVSW brings together professionals from diverse fields to advance the well-being of animals, their caregivers, and the professionals who serve them. Our foundation lies in the visionary work of the Center for Veterinary Social Work and the International Veterinary Social Work Summit. The idea for IAVSW emerged at the 2018 VSW Summit, where leaders in the field came together to establish a professional space for collaboration and growth. From this working group, our core pillars—education, advocacy, community building, and research—were created. In 2020, IAVSW was formalized, and the first board of directors was formed, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of veterinary social work. Today, we continue to honor our roots, fostering innovation, providing education, and building partnerships to create meaningful change. Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to the field, we invite you to join us as we work toward a future where the human-animal bond is fully understood and supported, and the mental health of those in animal care is prioritized.
