Mission Statement
Youngtimers is a nonprofit organization that promotes community, education, support, and research to improve the lives of individuals and families affected with early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease (EOFAD).
About This Cause
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that progressively slows and inhibits a person’s ability to remember, think, reason, and eventually carry out simply everyday tasks. Alzheimer’s disease usually occurs in people after the age of 65, however, there is a rare genetic form of Alzheimer's disease that affects individuals in their 30s-40s (referred to as early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease (EOFAD)). Many of these early onset cases occur due to a family history of Alzheimer’s disease passed on by inheriting a genetic mutation from a parent. In this disease, if a parent has the mutation, they have a 50% risk of passing the disease to their children. For this reason, families with EOFAD often see this disease affect many loved ones (siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins) across multiple generations. Due to the high genetic risk and very early symptom onset of this disease, many patients and families struggle to find adequate resources and support. In 2020, Youngtimers was formed to bring together EOFAD families and experts, that centered on providing meaningful support and resources for those affected by EOFAD. Youngtimers seeks to address these unmet needs by providing a community for invaluable patient interactions and support, building education and resource tools to improve daily lives, and establishing a platform for the patient voice, which we believe is critical for driving effective research efforts. We believe that providing support for these patients is not only advantageous to this specific disease community, but the larger Alzheimer’s disease community as well. These patients have proven essential in understanding and elucidating how Alzheimer’s disease develops in the brain and are involved in testing investigational drugs that target Alzheimer’s disease. Helping this community continue to stay engaged in research will ultimately help the rest of the world affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
