Mission Statement
Recipe For Humanity is an anti-recidivism movement whose mission is to empower formerly incarcerated people. Together, we train and employ cohorts in culinary arts post-incarceration. This program specializes in healthy foods, environmental issues, and untapped talent.
About This Cause
Chef Marquis Hayes, a self-taught culinary artist hailing from the Bronx, has embarked on a mission to reshape the lives of formerly incarcerated individuals through his innovative program, Recipe for Humanity. This pioneering initiative is the first of its kind to integrate an anti-recidivism culinary arts curriculum that emphasizes healthy foods, environmental issues, and the discovery of untapped talent. Chef Marq's journey from prison to prominent kitchens, including The French Laundry, Benu, and WD-50, where he met Chef Malcolm Livingston II and co-founded Ghetto Gastro, exemplifies his resilience and resourcefulness. Chef Marq's extensive experience is not only rooted in his culinary prowess but also in his entrepreneurial spirit. He runs 22 Chestnut, a farm-to-table restaurant and market in Cooperstown, NY, and has developed a luxury butter line known as Brown Butter New York. His ventures extend to launching catering companies, nationwide pop-ups, and super club functions. His commitment to giving back is demonstrated through his work with Drive Change NYC, a program that equips formerly incarcerated individuals with the essential soft skills needed in the hospitality industry. Nationwide, Chef Marq has built a collaborative network of chefs, farmers, fishermen, and sustainable food initiatives who share his vision. Chef Marq's philosophy, "We leave people better than we found them one bite at a time," encapsulates his dedication to transforming lives through the power of food and community. In 2021, Marq penned his first memoir, The Social Engineer: The ancestors of America's strange fruit are now the bruised fruit of America's garden. Chef continues to innovate and inspire as one of the first of thirty-two NY state CAURD licensee holders to establish his dispensary, Brown Budda New York, in Southampton, Long Island.
