Mission Statement
ROOTS. WOUNDS. WORDS.: A LITERARY ARTS REVOLUTION’S MISSION IS TO BRING THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF LITERARY ARTS TO US who are Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Brown, and of Color, as well as US who identify as LGBTQIA+, formerly-incarcerated, justice-involved, and/or poverty-born. Through visionary educational workshops, performance showcases, publication opportunities, and an annual writers’ retreat, Roots. Wounds. Words. centers and celebrates the storytelling traditions of Us marginalized writers. Roots. Wounds. Words. primary goals are to provide our storytellers with exceptional education, a plethora of opportunity and a robust tribe. Roots. Wounds. Words. seeks to propel our storytellers into the larger literary community, ultimately diversifying canon and what is currently a non-inclusive arts industry.
About This Cause
Roots. Wounds. Words. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers visionary literary arts programming including educational workshops, storyteller performances, publication opportunities, and a writers' retreat for US. Us BIPOC. Especially Us BIPOC who are also Us Queer. Us Trans. Us Gender Nonconforming. Us Justice-Involved. Us poverty-born. Us disabled. Us neuro-divergent. Us made of intersectional identities. Us Brazen. Us. We ensure that Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Brown and other People of Color have a safe, inclusive space to craft and tell our stories. Roots. Wounds. Words. produces a monthly Master of Craft Talk series that enables emerging BIPOC storytellers to learn literary craft from award-winning and widely acclaimed authors of color such as Jesmyn Ward, Kiese Laymon, Ryka Aoki, Daniel José Older, Said Jones, Linda Villarosa, Morgan Jerkins, and many more. Roots. Wounds. Words. offers literary arts workshops that center the nonfiction, fiction, poetry, playwriting, and screenwriting of BIPOC storytellers. Our workshops are for storytellers of all generations and writing levels—from those who have never considered writing their own narratives to those who are widely-published. Roots. Wounds. Words. produces COUNTERpult—the premiere storyteller showcase series dedicated to catapulting the counter-narratives of today’s emerging and established BIPOC storytellers of various intersectional identities. COUNTERpult performers include Brian Broome, Faylita Hicks, Khalisa Rae, Destiny Birdsong, and many more. Roots. Wounds. Words. produces a semi-annual Writers’ Retreat that serves as a sacred space for BIPOC storytellers to gain the tools, support and education necessary to grow their literary arts careers. Faculty have included Deesha Philyaw, Chen Chen, Destiny Birdsong, Indra Das, Prisca Dorcas Mojica Rodríguez, and Nice Shawl. Roots. Wounds. Words. publishes professional anthologies that contain literary art penned by Our storytellers. Within them, storytellers disrupt dominant narratives, replace the status quo, and provide a container wherein readers see themselves.
