About This Cause
San Diego Squared (SD2) was established in October 2020 to drive STEM Curiosity, STEM Commitment, STEM Education and STEM Employment for underserved communities in San Diego County. Our vision is a STEM ecosystem where every student believes they belong in STEM, has the opportunity to realize their true potential, and drives change in their community. Our mission is to connect underrepresented students to the power of STEM by providing access to education, mentorship, and the resources they need to lead the talent pipeline. San Diego Squared helps to impact lives in our community through the following areas of focus: Community Activation focuses on storytelling and creating interactive events in the community that lift voices and journeys of diverse STEM professionals and inspire young people to pursue a career in STEM. Squared Fellows is a yearlong rotation-based, mentorship program that exposes underrepresented high school students to innovative companies across San Diego. Students in cohorts are guided through career exploration in the local San Diego STEM ecosystem and receive ongoing mentorship and peer-to-peer support as they develop their own career trajectory and STEM identity. Squared Scholars program provides direct financial support through multi-year college scholarships to students pursuing a degree in a STEM field. We believe that financial support alone is not enough to support diverse students as they pursue a degree in a STEM field, so every scholar is paired with a yearlong mentor to help illuminate their path to a career in STEM. Squared Interns program pairs diverse college students with paid internship opportunities at STEM-driven companies in San Diego. Paid internships provide students with opportunities to learn about careers in STEM, gain hands-on experience, build employability and technical skills, and make connections in fields that interest them.
