Mission Statement

Equiticity is a racial equity movement, operationalizing racial equity by harnessing our collective power through research, advocacy, programs, and Community Mobility Rituals, and social enterprises to improve the lives of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people in our society. Equiticity’s vision is a mid- to large-size U.S. city where racial equity is fully integrated at the policy and legislative levels into every function, department, resource, and budget associated with the city’s operations, services, and programs. We envision Equiticity creating a U.S. city which serves as a global model for the rest of the world on showcasing how to normalize, prioritize, and operationalize a full throated and unflinching commitment to racial equity, as an equitably moving flow of resources contributing to reducing violence, improving health, creating jobs, and ultimately making our neighborhoods and cities more liveable for Black, Brown and Indigenous people.

About This Cause

Purpose Statement Equiticity is a racial equity movement, organizing for an operational commitment to racial equity to improve the lives of Black, Brown and Indigenous people across the United States. The Problem Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities across the United States are the most inequitably, disproportionately, and adversely impacted by violence, healthcare disparities, unemployment, poverty, over-policing, and lack of mobility, after many generations of segregation and disinvestment. These factors, along with a stark lack of equity in the distribution of resources, have undermined the development of more liveable neighborhoods and cities for Black, Brown, and Indigenous people. Vision Equiticity’s vision is a mid- to large-size U.S. city where racial equity is fully integrated at the policy and legislative levels into every function, department, resource, and budget associated with the city’s operations, services, and programs. Mission Equiticity is a racial equity movement, operationalizing racial equity by harnessing our collective power through research, advocacy, programs, and community mobility rituals, to improve the lives of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people in our society. At the neighborhood level, our target audiences are Black, Brown, Indigenous people, low- to moderate-income residents, stakeholders, organizers and community-based organizations. At the national level, our target audience consists of allies on racial equity – elected officials, policymakers, researchers, advocates, and activists as well as national organizations, foundations, and corporations focused on racial equity, racial justice, human and civil rights, and community development. This new vision for a mobility hub is a physical and digital space where neighborhood residents create community around mobility justice and environmental justice. This new vision for growing mobility amidst significant trauma, brings "hardware" and "software" together in a protected and safe space where culture and healing are centered. The Go Hub “software” includes community mobility rituals, and the power building necessary to develop a neighborhood-based, racial justice advocacy coalition. The Go Hub “hardware” includes the physical infrastructure, technology, and shared mobility devices necessary to grow mobility at a hyperlocal, neighborhood level. The Go Hub’s innovative integration of software and hardware requires a physical space to serve as a mobility community center for our members and neighborhood residents. BikeForce: E-Bike Technologies Workforce Development Program BikeForce is a workforce development program which will target students in their late teens and out of school young adults, with training around a wave of technologies ushering in a transportation revolution in our society, inclusive of electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, e-bikes, and e-scooters. The program will focus on emerging transportation technologies, such as e-bikes, e-scooters, battery systems, and electric motors and will apprentice teens and young adults in the North Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago. Program members will gain the necessary skill sets leading to living wage and career oriented job opportunities and/or entrepreneurial opportunities. The first iteration of this program will be a Summer 2022 program in North Lawndale, through a partnership with After School Matters. The Freedom & Culture Bicycle Cooperative The Freedom & Culture Bicycle Cooperative is our vision for manufacturing bicycles in North Lawndale on the Westside of Chicago, explicitly developed to remove the generational cycle of poverty, create living wage jobs, provide transferable and career oriented job skills to young adults, reduce hyper-local violence, and improve health and transportation related outcomes, all focused at the hyper-local, neighborhood level. We will manufacture beautifully designed, well built, and premium priced bicycles in North Lawndale, with young adults from the neighborhood, who are all worker-owners of the cooperative, and who all share collectively in the profits. Moving Freely Interactive Photography Exhibit Curated by recently graduated UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Administration student Mechiya Jamison, Moving Freely explores how mobility in its various forms can contribute to the fight for racial equity and build collective power for Chicago’s westside Black and Brown communities. The exhibit expands and humanizes the narrative surrounding mobility, emphasizing its definition of “freedom and ease”. The exhibit begs the question, “who has access to freedom and ease”? The exhibit celebrates Equiticity's 2020 “community mobility rituals” through Douglass Park, North Lawndale, Little Village, and other parts of Chicago. The walks and rides provided an opportunity for residents to learn about the interconnected histories, cultures, and environmental issues of their surrounding communities, and Equiticity's work toward racial equity. Third Annual Street Love Ride The Third Annual Street Love Ride is an anti-violence focused, community bicycle ride organized by Boxing Out Negativity, hosted in partnership with Equiticity, that takes place in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Westside of Chicago. The event draws hundreds of Chicagoans together each August to spread love and positivity at the hyperlocal, neighborhood level. Second Annual Biking Out Negativity Ride The Second Annual Biking Out Negativity Ride is an anti-violence and youth-focused, community bicycle ride organized by Boxing Out Negativity, hosted in partnership with Equiticity. The event draws over 50 community partners and hundreds of Chicagoans across the city to ride in support of the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Westside of Chicago. The Third Annual Chicago Bike Collective Ride The Third Annual Chicago Bike Collective Ride is a culminating celebration of another successful ride season here in Chicago and serves to honor all of the bicycle related organizations in and around our city who are actively serving Black and Brown communities. Chicago Parks Walking Series A series of six walking tours in six Chicago parks which seek to transform the way Black and Brown communities view and engage with their neighborhood parks. These tours allow people to experience an exploration of the often overlooked beauty and assets in our neighborhoods. These tours help people reconsider how active modes of travel benefit and enhance their lifestyles. The walks also increase social cohesion at the neighborhood level, which results in increased community trust and a decreased perception of hyperlocal violence. Chicago Parks Ride Series A series of six community bicycle rides connected to six Chicago parks, exploring Black and Brown neighborhoods in Chicago, designed to serve as a vehicle for social transformation—increasing mobility, accelerating racial equity, and advancing racial justice. These community rides highlight the natural assets in our communities, while also exploring both the beauty and the inequities in our neighborhoods. The rides also serve to increase social cohesion and collective trust at the neighborhood level.
