Mission Statement

Conservancy Friends of Aquarina, Inc. is a legacy foundation that advocates for education, conservation, restoration, and preservation on the Barrier Island of Melbourne Beach, Florida. Our focus is on raising environmental awareness and supporting partners that protect and preserve the Barrier Island’s precious and fragile native flora and fauna. We live in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge which stretches across 20.5 miles of beach and shoreline between Melbourne Beach and Wabasso Beach in Sebastian. This refuge protects sea turtles nesting grounds along the Atlantic Ocean and natural habitats in and along the Indian River Lagoon. Could you imagine what our little paradise would be without sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, white pelicans, roseate spoonbills and osprey populations? Help us to preserve and conserve our natural resources.

About This Cause

Education: Throughout the year we host experts from our charity partnerships through Zoom calls and in-person presentations to keep us current on ways to make a positive impact. We support interns at the Barrier Island Center and their STEM programming outreach endeavors. We provide funds to the MRC for summer camp scholarships. * Conservation: At our most recent Earth Day event, Paola Espitia of Ola'pi Creative spoke about advancing the conversations and actions about how the waters and ocean heal us, how we can then help others, and how together we can all protect and restore the waters and ocean that give us so much. * Restoration: Working with Florida Tech we continue a Living Dock project along the Indian River Lagoon, which consists of mats with dried oyster shells, which are then attached to dock pilings. The chemical composition in the shells attracts oysters, as well as other bivalves, and acts as natural habitat for filter-feeding organisms to settle on. In return, these communities will attract larger organisms such as fish, dolphins, and turtles, creating a diverse ecosystem. * Preservation: We supply funding for MRC's '1,000 Points of Life' water testing for herbicides as well as their annual coastal cleanup day; which last removed 4 tons of trash from lagoon shorelines. We also partnered with the Surfrider Foundation to organize a beach clean-up in honor of International Beach Clean-up Day. We support EEARSS.ORG which performs specific research and background involving Alligator toxicology, endocrinology, along with health of local ecosystems, Gopher Tortoise’s, controlled fires, viruses affecting wild alligator populations in Florida, sea turtle nesting populations, and survey data for county and federal level governments, including a proven track record with the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands Programs, NASA and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.
