Mission Statement

To support and empower the women farmers of Northern Uganda.

About This Cause

Agriculture in Northern Uganda is primarily performed by women. Because Northern Uganda has been decimated over the past 20 years by war inflicted on them by the Lord’s Resistance Army, the women farmers have been unable to accumulate any resources with which to pull themselves up out of deep poverty. The food they grow can barely feed themselves and their families, and if they are able to save cassava and grain to sell off-season when prices are higher, it must be stored in their thatched-roof huts with dirt floors, where they and their families live. The stored food often becomes moldy before it can be consumed or sold. The Fund to Benefit the Women Farmers of Northern Uganda was primarily created to support AWE, a Ugandan non-profit headed by agriculture specialist, Christine Aoyo. AWE aims to help these women farmers by purchasing and securing land on which to farm and teach new farming techniques. Among these is a new method to dry produce with a moisture reading card that identifies the optimal state of dryness for storage. This card, inexpensive by Western standards, is out of reach for these farmers but will drastically improve the yield of their stored produce and thus their income. With a private donation, AWE has already purchased and surveyed 5.5 acres of land and is in the process of securing it with a stone wall built by the local people, many of them the women farmers themselves. An architect has been hired to construct a grain storehouse, an $81,00 building that will be paid for with a global grant from Rotary International which has already been secured. In the early months of 2022, the most urgent need for project is completion the wall securing the compound (90% finished as of April 2022) and the fabrication of iron gates to complete the security of the compound so that construction can begin on the grain storehouse. The compound is currently guarded by paid guards. However, they become targets for theft and violence if valuable building materials are brought into the compound before the wall and gates are complete. Due to rapid inflation in materials costs, the initial donation was not able to completely secure the compound, and the project is currently at a standstill. Plans for the future of AWE include a well, a bakery and store built into the wall facing the road to sell fresh bread, and a Women’s Empowerment Center where women can gather indoors to learn new techniques in farming and bring the knowledge back to their own communities. The most pressing goal of the women in this area of Uganda is to become self-sustaining and attain and income such that they can not only feed themselves and their families but sent their children to school and ensure their exit from a cycle of poverty.
