Mission Statement

Here, we believe children learn best through play and we focus on nurturing the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. Our rigorous, play-based curriculum, combined with our experienced, caring staff creates a safe and creative environment for children to realize their full potential. Saint Petersburg Primary School (SPPS) serves families who are seeking a faith-based primary school education for their children. Our low student-teacher ratios and our experienced faculty facilitate exploration, curiosity and problem solving.

About This Cause

In our preschool program, children learn to work independently as well as cooperatively with their peers, while developing strong character traits such as empathy, perseverance, and responsibility. Early literacy and mathematics foundations, as well as each child’s social and emotional growth, are cultivated through a play-based, thematic curriculum. In our elementary program, students expand their skills as they explore engaging and complex units of study with an emphasis on the learning process, rather than simply memorizing content. Play-based learning is active and interactive, giving students opportunities to explore their acquired knowledge through hands-on, engaging projects. Our students become independent thinkers who know how to seek knowledge, question and interpret it, and develop evidence-based conclusions. Character development continues into our elementary program, expanding upon the social-emotional skills learned in preschool to include generosity, respect, appreciation for yourself and others, diligence, global citizenship, personal reflection, and a growth mindset. Cultivating a strong sense of community within our school is one of our core values. Parent Socials, Family Movie Night, Monthly Chapel Services, Playtime on the Playground, Halloween Costume Parade, and our Annual Art Show are a few of the ways our community stays strong and connected. Parent involvement is encouraged through active participation in school events, fundraisers, field trips, holiday parties, and more. When your child enrolls in our school, your family becomes a part of our loving school community and we become partners in your child’s education. Our play-based curriculum is grounded in research of best practice and the Florida Early Learning and Developmental Standards, and are embedded in teaching strategies that include play, discovery, interaction, and direct instruction. Lessons are prepared with social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual goals for our students. We support children who need extra encouragement as well as those who need extra challenges. Our teachers research and develop thematic units of study, integrating the standards across all domains into their instruction. Our 1s, 2s, and 3s classes use The Creative Curriculum to teach literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, art, and music. The Creative Curriculum is a “comprehensive, research-based curriculum that promotes exploration and discovery as a way of learning, enabling children to develop confidence, creativity, and lifelong critical thinking skills”. They also use the Cloud9World curriculum to support social and emotional learning, literacy, diversity, cultural sensitivity, and positive behavior. Our Pre-K classes use Learning Without Tears to support their literacy, mathematics, and handwriting instruction. Their monthly thematic units of study incorporate science and social studies into their daily work. Maintaining child-centered learning is important, so teachers may expand upon themes or add units of study according to student interest. STEAM is integrated into student learning with an emphasis on open-ended problem-solving while focusing on the process, not the product. K-12 Standards and are embedded in teaching strategies that include personal and group discovery, peer interactions, differentiated instruction, and project-based learning. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is integrated into the monthly thematic studies and students utilize the Media Center for research and presentations.
