Mission Statement
SBAAZ provides programming and services from conception through adulthood to those affected by Spina Bifida in Arizona. Our mission is to build a better and brighter future for all those impacted.
About This Cause
Formed in 1978 as a group of parents concerned for the well-being and socialization of their children born with spina bifida, the current chapter of the Spina Bifida Association of Arizona has kept at the forefront meeting current needs of all affected. The needs of differently-abled come with a higher price tag, sadly. Because the diagnosis of spina bifida does not carry with it significant cognitive delays, most families are unable to acquire assistance for expenses that increase the independence and success of their children who are now living to adulthood. Hand operated cycles that enable wheelchair users to participate in much needed physical activity and inclusive sports cost close to TWENTY times that of a standard bicycle. Transportation needs change as children mature and families are unable to transfer the young adult into a vehicle and stow a fold up wheelchair. Just exiting a vehicle to use an automated teller or run errands can add hours and stress to what most consider a simple task. As those with spina bifida in Arizona are living into adulthood, the association is charged with earliest interventions to prepare young children and their parents, as well as transitions guidance by assisting young adults who were not expected to live into their 20's... much less their 40's, 50's as we are now seeing. Programs and services focus on preparedness for independent living, best health and habits education and peer mentoring for support and camaraderie. SBAAZ facilitates numerous events throughout the year and seeks volunteers to share the joys of being a part of making a better tomorrow for these neighbors! Due to the economic levels of those we serve, and the physical implications, SBAAZ is a qualified charity for the Arizona Tax Credit. As of 2016 this dollar for dollar credit was increased to $400/single, head of household and $800/joint filers. Simply complete AZ321 when filing income taxes.. itemization NOT necessary! Thank you!
