Mission Statement

The mission of the Arizona Science Center is to inspire, educate, and engage curious minds through science. Formerly known as the Arizona Museum of Science and Technology, the Arizona Science Center (ASC) opened at its current location in 1997 after raising more than $50 million through voter-approved bond funds, land allocations and private contributions. Since our opening, we have hosted more than 9 million visitors. Arizona Science Center features a full complement of informal science programming including: more than 98,000 square feet of gallery space, containing more than 300 hands-on exhibits; an IMAX® Theater; the Dorrance Planetarium; traveling exhibitions; interactive demonstrations; camps and workshops; adult lectures; history exhibits highlighting Phoenix and surrounding areas; and school services including field trips, in-class outreach and teacher professional development.

About This Cause

In order to reach its mission, Arizona Science Center needs to continue to be proactive and responsive in outreach and educational involvement with K-12 education systems, the community, and business and industry. There is a need for a combination of formal and informal learning to benefit a lifelong learning experience. With an increasing emphasis on STEM in a progressive and ever-changing world, the Center is in a prime position to be the leader in the state, and globally, as the place to come for accurate information as well as engaging and relevant experiences. Arizona Science Center’s goal is to be a place to seed innovation and discovery in teaching and learning, to develop and experience models of effective teaching and learning, and to share and scale this learning for the benefit of leading, teaching, and learning. Recognizing an opportunity to better support students by serving the teachers and their need for high-quality professional development services, in October 2011 the Center for Teacher Success became part of Arizona Science Center and was renamed the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Center for Leadership in Learning to reflect ASC’s commitment to providing learning opportunities for all stakeholders in response to the issues facing K-12 education today. In collaboration with K-12 schools, districts and the Arizona Department of Education, the Center for Leadership in Learning delivers an array of differentiated support services for teachers, educational leaders, and parents/community members to enhance student learning. Arizona Science Center serves more than a half of a million visitors annually with its educational science, technology, engineering and math programs for all ages. The Center has a staff that includes 73 full-time and 70 part-time employees, and utilizes the support of 546 volunteers. Last year, volunteers contributed 21,457 hours of their time and talents to Arizona Science Center.
