Mission Statement

Make-A-Wish Arizona's mission is that, together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

About This Cause

In 1980, a worldwide movement began in Phoenix, Arizona with a 7-year-old’s wish. Chris Greicius was battling leukemia and his mom, Linda, wanted to bring a spark of joy back into his life. She led a group of inspired individuals on a mission to grant his wish of “catching bad guys.” Chris became Arizona’s first honorary police officer, rode in a helicopter, and earned his motorcycle officer’s wings. For a moment in time, Chris put aside his illness and experienced, once again, the excitement and wonders of simply being a kid. Sadly, Chris passed away four days later and was buried in his beloved policeman uniform. But not before making a profound impact on an entire community who witnessed how a single wish could transform the life of a child and their family. It was at this moment that Make-A-Wish was born. Established in 1980, Make-A-Wish Arizona is the founding chapter of this inspiring movement and has granted over 7,500 wishes in Arizona. Each year, over 540 children qualify medically for a wish throughout Arizona. Make-A-Wish Arizona grants wishes 100% free of charge and programming is solely supported by community philanthropy, corporate partners, and our dedicated volunteers. The impact of a wish is much more than a fun outing. Research shows that a critical illness can negatively affect the emotional health of patients, families, and caregivers. In a recent study, the following outcomes were reported: 95% of Wish Alumni felt more hopeful for the future after their wish 91% of Wish Alumni said their wish improved their overall quality of life 91% of Wish Parents believe the wish experience is a necessary part of the child’s treatment journey 98% of medical providers said the wish experience had a positive impact on a child’s physical well-being 90% of medical providers said a wish experience helps a child overcome feelings of sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, depression, and loneliness Children who were granted a wish were more likely to have fewer unplanned hospital and emergency room visits, saving on average $126,000 in health care costs per child. "Before I received my wish, my quality of life was horrible, and I had no desire to keep going. When I learned I would be getting a wish, I had something that made me want to fight for my life. Now, instead of having 100 seizures a day, I have less than 10 a day." – Anonymous, Wish Alumni What we are seeing over time is an unsaid power that wish experiences give kids. These kids are living longer, they're living better, they're having more fun in their life. And it all started with one experience …their wish.
