Mission Statement
The Vatican Observatory Foundation supports the Vatican Observatory's work in research, education and public outreach in astronomy and to promote its unique role in the dialogue between faith and science.
About This Cause
Of course one of the primary goals of the Vatican Observatory Foundation is to maintain the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) with its state-of-the-art technology at optimal efficiency through continual maintenance, upgrades and modernization. Currently one major project is to fully automate the telescope, which is proceeding thanks in part to a substantial grant from the Papal Foundation to the Vatican Observatory. Through this upgrade, scientists and researchers – and, with our educational and outreach programs, students and advanced amateur astronomers – will be able to observe with the VATT, in real time, from virtually any location on earth. In addition, a program is underway with Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona to allow synoptic (simultaneous) observations with the VATT and two comparable University telescopes to form a network for increased data. The expected outcomes from applying these advances are increased convenience and economic savings for both astronomers and educational institutions; expanded flexibility in scheduling use of the telescope; increased and enhanced scientific research; and more effective and widespread educational and public outreach programs. In conjunction with our research the education and public outreach programs are an essential part of our mission. Besides the many speaking engagements scheduled by staff members each year, four specific programs are supported by the Vatican Observatory Foundation: an international summer school for advanced astronomy students, a professional development workshop on astronomy for educators and ministers, an annual public seminar, and the Sacred Space Astronomy blog.
