Mission Statement
Children in foster care need relationships with stable, caring adults. AASK recruits, trains, and supports foster families, adoptive families, and mentors for children in care.
About This Cause
The purpose of AASK is to provide lasting and permanent relationships for children in foster care. Children come into care through no fault of their own, due to abuse, neglect, and abandonment. AASK connects children with foster families, adoptive families, and kinship families who provide caring and stable homes for these children. AASK also recruits adult mentors for children living in group homes and shelters, and reunites siblings separated by foster care. Secure attachments with trusted adults, brothers and sisters help children cope with trauma and loss, and improve their social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development for a lifetime. Arizona is currently experiencing a foster care crisis, as the number of children coming into the child welfare system continues its rapid rise. Over 18,000 children are in foster care in Arizona in 2015, an increase of 75% during the last 7 years. AASK recruits, trains, and supports foster families and tailors its services to the needs of the children served. Special training is available for families providing Specialized Medical Foster Care, and care for children with developmental delays and disabilities. AASK's Todos Los Ninos program matches Hispanic and Latino children with families of similar heritage, and provides services in both English and Spanish. Behavioral health support is available to all AASK families who are parenting children with challenging behaviors. Community support is vital for programs that receive no state funding, such as the Mentoring and Siblings programs, and donor support is needed and appreciated now more than ever.
