Mission Statement
To serve individuals touched by HIV/AIDS through prevention, education, client-centered services, and coordinated care in collaboration with community partners.
About This Cause
Who We Are: Southwest Center is an integrated healthcare clinic in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. We are leaders in providing quality prevention, education, medical care, and supportive services to the community, with specialties in serving LGBTQ+ individuals, those affected by HIV/AIDS, and anyone seeking non-judgmental, culturally-competent sexual health care. For nearly 30 years, the Southwest Center has been a place of safety, love, and care in the Phoenix community. We were founded by Kirk Baxter in response to Arizona's HIV epidemic, and have grown to become the leading community-based HIV prevention, care, and support organization in the Valley. Now, we have expanded our services to include everything from nutritional assessments and primary care to counseling and case management, and even trans healthcare and condom distribution. This integrated, holistic, and stigma-free approach is what sets us apart. Who We Serve: The Southwest Center serves over 30,000 Arizonans a year, primarily in Maricopa County. In total, about 80% of those who receive direct services from the Center are low-income, and nearly half live at or below the federal poverty level. Additionally, about a third have experienced homelessness, and just over a quarter use Medicaid for health insurance. In 2017, nearly 20% of clients identified as Black/African American, and almost 40% identified as Hispanic/Latino. Seen together, these data indicate that our clients are members of vulnerable social and economic populations who need a safe space for culturally-responsive medical and support services.
