Mission Statement
To provide responsive, progressive, and dynamic programs to empower individuals with Intellectual Disabilities to realize their dreams of optimal independence, meaningful employment, significant social relationships, and full participation in our community. (California & Arizona)
About This Cause
Like everyone else, people who have intellectual disabilities seek fulfillment in everyday activities and want to contribute to their communities and live as independently as they can. Our campuses in Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, and San Mateo, California serve more than 450 adults who have intellectual disabilities and their families. We offer life skills, health and wellness, employment and cultural arts including drama, dance, music, and painting. - Life Skills Programs Helping our participants achieve greater independence is central to our mission. Our Life Skills Programs utilize a person-centered approach to help each of our members learn the necessary skills to manage every day tasks and responsibilities. Our curriculum emphasizes support on functional academics and household management, while also providing community-based courses on public resource utilization, socialization, and community service projects. All programs are designed to foster an environment that is safe, friendly, and helpful to members' pursuit of their full potential. - Vocational Programs At One Step Beyond, we believe every person should have the chance to be an active and productive member of society, and be able to contribute to their own community and livelihood. As employment is an important factor for fulfillment and optimal self-reliance, we provide comprehensive programs to give participants the tools they need to take this important step. Designed to simulate a real workplace, our training programs include everything needed to effectively pursue and maintain employment, and are taught in a safe and controlled environment. Participants build skills in customer service, essential job duties, effective communication with co-workers and supervisors, managing timecards, and other work proficiencies. - Culinary Training Programs One of our greatest success stories at One Step Beyond is our Culinary Training Program, which gives our participants the tools to not only take care of themselves, but also access new work opportunities. The curriculum includes life skills-oriented courses intended for home kitchen management, as well as more advanced proficiencies useful for a commercial setting. Our culinary graduates move ahead with essential skills in customer service, cooking, and kitchen management that will serve them throughout their lives. Our culinary education is an involved process with clear benchmarks along curriculum blocks such as safety and sanitation, healthy food choices/recipes, methods of cooking, customer service, and kitchen discovery. We offer graduates further employment opportunities in the One Step Beyond Catering Company and Group Supported Employment, allowing our participants to earn additional job skill training and experience in the food service industry. - Health and Wellness Programs Health, wellness and nutrition are all elements of a balanced and positive lifestyle, and so we feature each in our One Step Beyond curriculum. We incorporate healthy physical activity and effective nutritional coaching into each day's activities, and also provide opportunities for specific areas of fitness. These include participating in Special Olympics Athletic Programs and competitions year-round and Personally Fit Coaching for those individuals who have specific health and fitness goals. - Performing and Fine Arts Programs Performance Art represents a valuable means of expression and participation for all members of the community. While arts opportunities can be difficult to access for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, the participants of One Step Beyond enjoy a busy day that includes: a Dance Program, supported by the Molly Lawson Foundation, with weekly dance classes, yoga, and group fitness, an Art and Ceramics Studio, supported by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, with access to professional kilns, a fully equipped music studio with daily classes in vocal and instrument training as well as music production, and several drama classes and performance opportunities. - Recreation and Social Activities Recreational experiences and social opportunities are essential parts of life. These activities factor into developing one's identity as well as seeking personal fulfillment. Our vision of equal opportunities for our participants with Intellectual Disability includes these goals, and so we offer a full calendar of social and recreational activities. California Go Green Club Program Participants work individually, as a team, and with their families to Go Green! Recycling, water conservation, purchases, wise merchandise choices, environment, sustainability.
