To increase healthcare access for communities in Africa by building the capacity of local healthcare enterprises
About This Cause
We are a global non-profit with an innovative private sector approach to health systems strengthening in Africa. We build the capacity of local healthcare enterprises in resource constrained countries in Africa to deliver quality, affordable and accessible health products and services to patients and their communities. We do this by facilitating remote technical assistance projects delivered by teams of highly-skilled corporate volunteers. The enterprises we work (our ‘clients’) with span the healthcare value chain in Africa and are not public / state healthcare entities. Working across the healthcare value chain means we work to strengthen: production and distribution of health commodities; healthcare service providers; and, health intermediaries and payers. Our skills’ building approach ultimately improves access to, and the quality of, essential health products and services in low income countries in Africa. Africa accounts for almost 25% of the ‘global burden of disease’ and 11% of the entire world population, yet produces only 3% of all drugs. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) estimates 94% of Africa’s pharmaceutical products are imported (valued at $16 billion annually). 1.2 billion people live with barriers to accessing quality healthcare products and services, and well-placed efforts to improve access to products and services can easily impact tens of millions. BHS has experience reaching clients and their beneficiaries (many of which are the most vulnerable). Over the past five years, we have expanded to 4 new countries, identified over 200 potential clients and opportunities to engage across 10 counties, and reached over 26 clients via 34 projects. We are constantly evolving alongside our clients. You can serve as a volunteer to impact people on the continent of Africa with highly impactful technical assistance from your location, without the need for travel. Our technical assistance programs enable you to support on your own or in teams (depending on need and skill sets) and require approximately 18 to 35 hours of virtual support time over 3 to 9 months (depending on client needs and scope). We at BHS believe that impact is important and will measure and share results and impact along the way and with you and the client as the project progresses and closes.
