Mission Statement
Shift Our Ways Collective (SOW) is a Volunteer & Women-led environmental nonprofit based in Arleta, California since 2020. Our mission is to grow sustainable communities that are accessible and inclusive for all. From Food Deserts to Food Oasis we have taken empty lots and grown them into flourishing eco hubs. Our first space was started on a 5,000 square foot lot. In this space we call our Backyard Farm, we have diverted 5,500 pounds of food waste from landfills, donated over 700 pounds of fresh produce, and have led over 50 community events. We are connecting neighbors to not only the land but also to their health & wellness. Having an organic farm in their backyard makes it possible to access a space where they can spend time outdoors, nurturing their minds, and harvesting produce to nourish their bodies.
About This Cause
SOW Collective Backyard Farm is a resource center offering a local organic food source, composting services, and re-purposed gardening supplies that enable our neighbors to grow their own food at home. By doing so, we created a neighborhood level food system that nourishes and replenishes the people and place. But we didn’t stop there! Realizing the need for comprehensive solutions, we dreamed up a space with educational and community-building intentions. This looks like workshops, youth eco-education, and social events that aim to empower and uplift the communities we passionately serve. What will your donation do? 1. Allow the Backyard Farm in Arleta to continue providing fresh produce at no cost to the community who was previously located in a food desert. For each $10 you donate, you help irrigate and maintain 1 vegetable plant from seed into the hands of a neighbor. 2. Help transform the 5,500 sq. ft. farm space into an educational hub, sustainability model and event space for community gatherings. This includes seating, shade, storage for our farm stand, and educational signage. 3. Support the continued efforts of the SOW Collective Team to expand our reach and impact through capacity building. We have opportunities to grow our team and create more green spaces in neighboring schools and lots across the San Fernando Valley of California. 4. Help us expand into the Reseda Community as we partner with a local women owned nursery. Your donation will help us open up our second resource center.
