Mission Statement
The Lawndale Pop-Up Spot is an innovative initiative to connect history, culture, and nature -- and to be a part of the great efforts taking place in North Lawndale. It is a place for community-created exhibitions, installations, and education.
About This Cause
The Lawndale Pop-Up Spot is a community museum in a shipping container dedicated to sponsoring exhibits and events by and for the community of North Lawndale in Chicago. The Lawndale Pop-Up Spot aims to provide space for North Lawndale artists, historians, curators, and advocates to present fantastic and engaging exhibits and events for people of all ages; and to collaborate with other North Lawndale organizations and residents in their work to help North Lawndale thrive. North Lawndale is an historic community in Chicago, with a predominantly African American population and a legacy of activism and perseverance in the face of larger forces of disinvestment, redlining, and disregard. Even before the Pop-Up Spot opened in 2019, we worked within the community to explore how a community museum could fit within the fabric of the neighborhood. Our first project was a community-painted mural in collaboration with the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project. Beginning in 2019, our work has centered on education on curation practices, providing space for emerging artists, community engagement through free public events, and partnerships with other North Lawndale stakeholders. In addition to the 5-8 exhibits we sponsor each year, we co-sponsor "Litter-Free Lawndale" community clean-ups, a weekly nature walk, and a summer-long series of festivals on Douglas Blvd. A sampling of our exhibits over the years include the teen-curated "A Safe Place" exhibit on responses to violence; "Moving Freely," an exploration of racial justice through the lenses of the environment and transportation; an annual pay-what-you-want bookstore in collaboration with Open Books; and "Pressure Makes Diamonds," in which a dozen North Lawndale residents came together to learn curation practices and devise and install an exhibit about diamonds - both physical and metaphorical.
