Mission Statement
The mission of Sacred Sorrows is to help bereaved mothers and grandmothers, through spiritual retreats and programs, experience the integration of deep grief through the mystery of grace. A secondary goal is to provide education, encouragement, and direction to the friends of the grieving, who fervently want to help the bereaved.
About This Cause
Sacred Sorrows was founded by a deeply creative and strongly spiritual woman who unfortunately endured the sudden and traumatic loss of her beloved son in June 2019. At the time of her loss, Rita Morton was managing a successful career in business and was deeply engaged in leading women's spirituality programs, possessing over 25 years of expertise in retreat development, presentation, writing and program planning endeavors. Her son Chad's untimely death forced a transformation that was wholly informed by Rita's faith, and qualified by her past experience. After a series of events that could only be attributed to Divine Providence, Rita journeyed through a 30-day silent retreat based in the wisdom tradition of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Her experience was so profound - and her intense grief was integrated in such a powerful way - that she promptly discerned her call to help other grieving mothers and grandmothers encounter this same kind of healing. It wasn't a call that she desired, but one that she had been (through her life experience) uniquely prepared to fulfill. The retreats and workshops presented by Sacred Sorrows offer peace and healing to grieving mothers and grandmothers, no matter how much time has passed since their loss. By entering the respite of a 4-day retreat, their grief gently meets Grace. Grieving moms spend quiet time in the restorative beauty of nature; engage in soothing guided meditations; rediscover their creativity; and experience "new things" in prayer invitations. During our "Afternoons of Remembrance and Reflection", the bereaved are invited to bring a supportive friend or family member. Special "friends" breakout sessions are included in these afternoon programs and are focused on providing practical tips, resources, encouragement, and direction to the friends who fervently want to help the grieving women in their life. By engaging in our programs, grieving mothers and grandmothers begin to find the peace that surpasses all understanding. They discover and honor the deeper meaning in their grief, and experience transformation in ways they cannot imagine, and are difficult to explain. They begin to understand that the story of their loss is not the end of their story, but the beginning of a great and glorious hope for the future, in an everlasting life - where there will be no more tears or sadness, but only joy. Sacred Sorrows is a powerful antidote to the hopelessness experienced by grieving mothers and grandmothers in our culture today.
