Mission Statement

Traceability is often viewed as a technical endeavor, confined behind closed doors, but when applied through objective science at scale, it can serve the common good and transform entrenched inequalities in global commodity systems.

About This Cause

World Forest ID was established in 2017 by a consortium of institutions, including the World Resources Institute, the Forest Stewardship Council, the U.S. Forest Service International Program and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, who recognized that a radical new approach to supply chain accountability was necessary. At the heart of our work is the collection of tree and plant samples from vulnerable forests around the world. Every tree and plant has a unique chemical, genetic, and anatomical signature tied to its species and location of harvest. By collecting and analyzing the chemistry of georeferenced samples, World Forest ID creates cutting-edge, AI-enabled, spatial models that trace traded products back to their source with precision. Transparent and credible supply chains play a vital role in protecting forests, driving meaningful progress toward global sustainability goals. Transparency also makes it possible to build a future where neither farmers nor consumers are disadvantaged by the complexity and opacity of supply chains. With our growing foundation of over 58,142 georeferenced samples from 595 species across 59 countries, our work continues to expand its global impact. Each new sample enhances our ability to train our models and increases the granularity of our origin testing, bringing us closer to a future of fully transparent supply chains, and science-based protection for forests and the people that depend on them. As a small, dedicated team, we rely on our international network of collectors, scientific institutions, and collaborators. Your support—whether through time, resources, or donations—can help accelerate our work, ensuring that forest ecosystems, responsible producers, and consumers all benefit from a future of ethical and transparent supply chains. Support: - Collect samples on hikes or vacations - Volunteer to help us build the technology required to model, host and make impact with our unique data - Donate to sample collection collaboration with the US Adventure Scientists - Help finance forest expeditions in the Amazon and Congo basins - Help finance work with changemakers in the cocoa sector - protecting small farmer livelihoods and child laborers in West Africa
