Mission Statement
Urban Compassion Project is committed to the heath, welfare, and empowerment of the unhoused. In building relationships, and bridges to services, we encourage humanity with compassion, and empathy, while promoting community. We clean the trash that threatens the health and safety of community members, and provide wrap around services for the unhoused. We build community between the unhoused and housed community members. We seek to encourage humanity with acts of kindness, compassion, and empathy.
About This Cause
Urban Compassion project was founded by Vincent Ray Williams III, who at the conception of UCP was still homeless after 26 years. After considering his experiences, and difficulty accessing care, he built a model to allow compassion, dignity, and human kindness to take center stage. Today services include, but are not limited to: Volunteer led cleanups In collaboration with our unhoused neighbors and community volunteers, we conduct weekly cleanups throughout Oakland, removing on average 1.2 tons of trash and debris that in most cases are a result of illegal dumping, and the city of Oakland as well as Cal Trans' lack of resources to clean and sanitize our streets, parks and waterways. This debris poses public health, safety and environmental hazards. While casting a negative light on the unhoused who live in it. With every cleanup, we provide the unhoused with the tools necessary to sustain cleaner and safer areas themselves. (144.3 tons removed in 2022) Mutual aid Every week we distribute community donated mutual aid items to on average 1,800 of our unhoused neighbors. We accept gently used or new items including, but not limited to: *Blankets, bedding and pillows *Coats, clothing, shoes *Toiletries *Kitchen ware *Sexual Health Kits *Harm reduction Kit (Narcan, fentanyl testing strips) Case Management/Advocacy With a client centered care model, we put emphasis on listening to clients and their needs, versus guiding them. This ensures that we can link clients to services and build case specific plans tailored for each individual. We advocate for the just treatment of all, to ensure that local City and State government follow policy and procedure in regard to encampment cleanings and closure. We advocate for clients who have been working with other organizations with not much progress, building partnerships, and collaborations to find the best suitable resources and services for an individual's specific need. Case management services include but are not limited to: *Linkage to transitional housing *Linkage to tiny/community cabins *Linkage to safe parking *Linkage to substance use programs *Reintegration to medical care *Linkage to LGBTQ specific services *Housing resources *Linkage to elderly care *Linkage to mental health services and resources *Resources for showers *Referrals to sexual health testing and services *Referrals to support groups *Referrals to employment opportunities *Assistance obtaining necessary identifying documents *Guidance and support for filling out form, documents. setting appointments *Court ordered community service *Court ordered diversion
