Mission Statement
CoolxDad's mission is to aid and uplift all fathers of color striving to build a better world for their children and serve the communities in which they live. CoolxDad works tirelessly to supporting fathers of color and their communities through advocacy, fellowship, enlightenment, and action.
About This Cause
CoolxDad engages with its community through specific, intentional and consistent programming. We believe in a well-rounded approach that supports our mission of advocacy, fellowship, enlightenment and action. Advocacy connects community members to resources. Fellowship supports the mental, physical, spiritual and social health of our community. Enlightenment helps to transform communities through information, literature, art and communication. Action brings everything together to turn ideas and words into real change. We are eager to provide a platform for fathers of color in the community who are seeking to better themselves and the lives of their children through education; healthy social, cultural and civic engagement; exposure to the arts; financial literacy; and philanthropy. Since its inception in 2020, the objective of CoolxDad has been to uplift, inspire and empower fathers of color and provide them with a unique space for healthy engagement with each other and their children. Organizations devoted exclusively to black fathers have been non-existent or largely ignored in the United States. By countering the negative stigmas, stereotypes and realities surrounding fathers of color and the families they represent, CoolxDad seeks to transform communities by combining values with real initiatives and events that help transcend from a survival mentality to a legacy mind state. The success of CoolxDad is due in large part to the reality that an organization like CoolxDad provides a crucial societal need – the need, now more than ever, to fully expose the humanity and dignity of fathers of color. Realizing that fathers come from all walks of life, levels of education and backgrounds, CoolxDad is an inclusive and collaborative group of fathers united by a single pledge: to better themselves while nurturing their children in such a way that they flourish. Because America's portrayal of the black father has been historically negative, how a father of color sees himself in society and in his children's eyes is important. At the heart of every CoolxDad project is the opportunity to portray and expose the full humanity of the black father as actively engaged, participatory, loving and nurturing, emotionally engaged, interested in his legacy and invested in his family and community. CoolxDad is seeking this grant to broaden its reach in the City of Houston with the objective of empowering fathers of color through impactful programming that recognizes their uniqueness; supports their financial, creative and social endeavors; and educates and inspires them to excel as individuals, as parents and as members of the communities in which they live and work. One fact holds true in any society: growing up without a father figure negatively affects a child. Fathers have a critical impact on child development and the absence of one can have long-lasting and far- reaching consequences that spill over into adulthood. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 18.4 million American children grow up without the physical presence of a father. Fifty-percent of that number are of African-American or Latinx decent. Studies show that fatherless children are more prone to poverty; have poorer educational outcomes; have greater difficulty finding stable employment; are at an increased risk for substance abuse, addiction, depression, behavioral issues and suicide; are more likely to have children during their teen years; are incarcerated at a higher rate including as juveniles; and are at higher risk for repeating parental absenteeism. For African-American and Latinx populations, life-outcomes for fatherless children are statistically graver. CoolxDad is an organization that is taking pivotal steps to change the fatherhood narrative in black and brown communities in Houston by empowering them and celebrating their shared histories while addressing their unique needs and challenges as men of color. By doing so, we believe we can positively change the trajectory of the lives of many children and families. CoolxDad's vision is to eradicate negative stigmas surrounding fathers of color and their children through signature and core programs centered around education, financial literacy, physical and mental wellness, history, the arts and philanthropy. Programming is designed to provide fathers and children an opportunity to gather and dads a space in which to be vulnerable; to learn; to fellowship; to be inspired; to connect with each other; to share a meal or an outing; to have candid discussions; and to share knowledge, ideas and experiences. While education is at the core of all programming, we focus on enhancing the relationship between dads and their children and strengthening the parenting skills and life skills that result in healthier family units and healthier communities. We invest our resources in building sustainable programs that are relevant, collaborative and involve sustainable partnerships with corporate donors and organizations. A single motivating factor behind the creation of CoolxDad is the underlying history of neglect and emotional abuse experienced by men of color and the resulting pattern of community trauma. Through strategic practices and initiatives in support of whole-person wellness, CoolxDad will make a measurable difference and have a transformational impact on individuals, families and communities of color. By providing a holistic, safe and inviting space for black and brown fathers CoolxDad is able to connect and share their lived experiences, incubate ideas, encourage them to be themselves, experience joy, and to facilitate physical, social, emotional and mental wellness. By giving our community a living space to go and catch up on CoolxDad events, community members and leaders, visiting lecturers, important literature and other cultural content, we bring CoolxDad’s vision to our community on demand. We are inclusive. We are holistic. Our focus and our mission is our deepdedication to fathers of color and their children. We welcome all fathers into our programs regardless of where they are in their lives and in their relationships with their children. We are holistic in our approach to the health and well-being of fathers with the intention of supporting the whole person in relationship to others. Fathers are fully engaged with their children because fathers are supported as they strive to be creative, competent, compassionate andpresent parents.
