Mission Statement
Mindz Matter is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit that aims to provide mental health education and resources through community efforts to youth athletes and youth sports organizations primarily in underserved communities.
About This Cause
Founded in 2021 by Dr. Jasmine Cohen-Young, Mindz Matter, Inc. is committed to addressing the mental health needs of young athletes, particularly those from marginalized communities who often face unique challenges such as performance pressure, substance use, and the stigma surrounding mental health. Our organization operates with an understanding of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)—factors like access to healthcare, socioeconomic status, education, and the surrounding environment—that significantly impact the mental well-being of youth in underserved areas. Marginalized youth, especially those from low-income and minority communities, often experience reduced access to quality mental health care due to financial barriers, a lack of local services, and limited knowledge about available resources. This gap in care can exacerbate mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and substance use among young athletes. Our programs are designed to directly address these challenges by providing accessible mental health literacy workshops, peer support initiatives, and family engagement events. These initiatives empower athletes, coaches, and families with tools and strategies that promote mental wellness, build resilience, and normalize conversations about mental health. By focusing on addressing the underlying social determinants—such as lack of access to health services, stigma, and educational disparities—Mindz Matter aims to close the mental health gap in sports, ensuring that all athletes, regardless of background, can thrive both mentally and physically.
