WESHINE WELCOMING EMPOWERING SAFE HABITATION INITIATIVE

PORTLAND, Oregon, 97232 United States

Mission Statement

The mission of WeShine is to develop and operate welcoming, safe, and empowering transitional micro-villages in Portland neighborhoods for some of the most vulnerable individuals among our houseless population. These villages are small, serving 10-12 people, with a live-in village-life coordinator assisting with self-management and seeking services necessary for our guests’ successful transition to permanent affordable housing. Our vision is to engage neighborhoods, faith communities and private property owners to collaborate with us in establishing micro-villages throughout the City. Our longer-term vision is to develop and operate a coordinated network of temporary neighborhood-based micro-villages distributed across the Portland area. With these small villages in as many as 50 neighborhoods and/or faith communities, we can make a huge impact on reducing the number of unmanaged and unsafe camps in Portland.

About This Cause

WeShine is a young charity, having incorporated in May, 2021. We believe in the need for a wide variety of shelter alternatives located in the heart of our neighborhoods, rather than out of sight in food, transit and service deserts. We believe that the unhoused need trauma-informed, anti-oppressive and person-centered shelter and services. We understand that most people living on the streets have suffered unimaginable trauma, systemic racism and other oppressions. This is particularly true for people of color, trans and gender non-transforming people, as well as those with mental health issues. Our villages are designed to serve these individuals in particular. In addition to shelter, we provide the supportive services and community engagement that will help our guests regain their dignity, agency and skills to transition to permanent housing.
