Our mission is to end hunger for individuals and families on the West Side of Chicago, foster community, and empower individuals experiencing behavioral and mental health crises to recover and live their full potential.
About This Cause
The Above and Beyond Food Pantry combats food apartheid on the West Side of Chicago, particularly the neighborhoods of West Garfield Park, East Garfield Park and North Lawndale. As a Champion Food Rescue Provider with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, we distributed over 772,000 pounds of food to nearly 44,000 households last year alone, our highest record since operation. The Above and Beyond Free Food Pantry has always, by design, been more than just a food pantry. While we provide immediate hunger relief six days a week (more than any other pantry in Chicago), we address the root causes of food insecurity through holistic care management. We meet housing, employment and behavioral health needs by connecting patrons to services at Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center, and primary care needs through our partnership with GreenBax Health Center, which includes toxicology screening, Medication Assisted Treatment and management of chronic illness. All of these providers are equipped to properly care for those struggling with homelessness, Substance Use Disorder, and other health and wellbeing issues that often occur alongside poverty and food insecurity.
