Mission Statement
Artillery is a Latinx-owned, AAPI/Queer-led community art space in the heart of the Mission’s Latino Cultural District, centered in three core values: we connect to and honor our Indigenous Cultures; we activate our connection with the Earth and preserve nature; we grow and empower our BIPOC Community through the arts. Like SFAC, we believe that art is a vital catalyst for social awareness, wellness, and change, and seek to lower barriers of access for BIPOC artists.
About This Cause
We offer the only long-term financial assistance program for BIPOC ceramicists in San Francisco! In this six month program, apprentices learn how to use clay as a tool for well-being on individual, community, global, and ancestral scales. Artillery is a vibrant, culturally diverse art community, and it shows– our members create while immersed in traditional masks, gather sacred herbs, and indigenous iconography honored in paint, clay, and photographs. As the artistic home to 40+ members rooted in myriad cultural identities, we are bringing culture, fine art, and creative expression to our corner of Mission and 24th. Over the past two years, we have worked hard to offer a holistic curriculum to our apprentices, including full studio access with the artistic medium of clay, spiritual connection to ancestral lineages, finding the artistic voice, water conservation, ecological restoration, sustainable food practices, as well as marketable Studio Technician skills. The culmination of the program is a final art show where the apprentices create pieces that weave together the stories of their ancestral lineages with the needs of their communities today. Three alumni are now paid staff and teachers.
