BIRTH COMPANIONS COMMUNITY CENTER

Mission Statement

Empowering families through pregnancy, birth and postpartum. BCCC is a community of native Spanish speaking Birth Warriors cultivating healing through education, support and use of ancestral medicine. We offer support while respecting our client’s culture, race, religion, gender preference and beliefs.

About This Cause

BCCC is a nonprofit providing doula support and so much more for Latinx birthing families to nourish their children in the early perinatal period with safety in their own language and culturally appropriate heritage of birthing. However, the women BCCC serves are navigating undocumented status, poverty, oppression trauma as a result of migration, and lack of access to wellness services here in our wealthy city of San Francisco. In spite of this abundance, these families often face a system that re-traumatizes birthing mothers of color and contributes to poorer birth outcomes that include increased maternal morbidity and the serious complications in birth and the postpartum period for the mother and baby. BCCC faces these challenges by training Latinx doulas from their community to advocate for birthing mothers and act as liaisons in hospitals. They build relationships with care providers, act as both cultural and linguistic translators, advocate for the mother and baby and offer much needed comfort and support during a time of intense uncertainty and joy. BCCC also offers postnatal services like infant massage, pre/post natal yoga, collective baby showers, breastfeeding classes, as well as diapers and clothes. Their vision of the future includes offering more food security support, mental health care for mothers, and integrating trauma informed and accessible yoga teacher training into doula training.
