Mission Statement

Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company is committed to furthering contemporary dance as an accessible and valued art form through performance and dance education that raise the standards, deepen the understanding and promotes personal connections with dance. The Company pursues this overall vision through commissioned original works from exceptional choreographers, provides dance education for all levels and outcomes, touring endeavors, performance and education training, and developing dance audiences. We commit to making sure “Dance is for Everybody,” as our motto has stated since 1964 and we are dedicated to continued inclusion across all self-hoods and experience. We seek to foster equity, diversity, access, and inclusion for all. We stand against racism and engage in meaningful dialogue to measurably change our policies, procedures, and programs to meet all of these goals.

About This Cause

Founded in 1964 and a resident company at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, Salt Lake City, Utah, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company is committed to ensuring that dance is inclusive and equitable to all. As per our motto “Dance is of Everybody”, continues to engage and embrace diversity from our K-12 programs, to Company dancers and guest choreographers, to staff. We are committed to our community and ensuring the Utah’s cultural fabric is part of the global dance scene by commissioning and premiering dances in Salt Lake by nationally recognized choreographers. The Company annually presents 21 performances of three different productions (fall, winter and spring): 10 free, fully-produced Student Matinees for 7,500 – 10,000 students, and 11 public performances. Each of the three productions includes a Moving Parts Family Series, an $8, one-hour Saturday matinee, and is preceded by a free Meet the Choreographer event that provides insight into the creative process – especially the 3-4 world premieres. Evening creative movement classes are also offered. The student matinees include English and Spanish narration in order to be more inclusive of Utah’s population – especially students attending Title 1 schools for disadvantaged youth. Pre-performance Teacher Guides are sent to prepare students for the Matinees. As a resident company of the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City, our company has become a staple of the artistic landscape of the Rockies, engaging audiences through performances, touring, and educational and community outreach. We commission exceptional choreographers who bring vital and relevant work to our stages for our home season performances. Included in each performance is our Moving Parts Series, a family-friendly and sensory-friendly matinee, which welcomes and encourages those with a variety of needs, including, but not limited to, young children, people on the autism spectrum, and those who are deaf and hard of hearing, to experience contemporary dance with freedom from fear of disruption. With our commissions, we bring projects like To See Beyond Our Time to fruition. This piece seeks to address the troubling fact that the Great Salt Lake is in danger of drying up. According to The Smithsonian, the lake has dwindled below historic levels. We are at major risk for habitat loss, job loss, lake effect loss, and health loss of our people and our state. We want to encourage audiences to encounter their apathy and move toward legislative reform that revitalizes and keeps our Great Salt Lake here for generations. Our company of dancers brings multicultural representation to Utah’s professional stage. We hire 6 diverse dancers for 38 to 44 weeks of employment, with insurance. They are trained in both performance and educational outreach, allowing them to tour through Utah, playing a vital role in our state’s great theaters and K-12 classrooms. The Company has also led weekly classes to those living with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), and other neurodegenerative and age-related disorders. These classes give those with PD a sense of bodily autonomy, and access to physical activity, which helps manage symptoms of these conditions. Our free, Statewide and annual Education Program is authorized and partially funded by the Utah Board of Education for its Professional Outreach Program to Schools (POPS) ‒ but must be matched. The Program utilizes over 50% of our budget and dancer work weeks. We present over 700* free Education events throughout Utah to 32,000+ K-12 students at 150+ public and charter schools in 22+ districts — with 58% of students from Title 1 schools for disadvantaged families. Our Education Program also includes: workshops for Utah Educators ‒ for which they can receive State re-licensure credit, as well as workshops for high school and university students, professional dancers and the general public; the Rose Exposed, open master classes and collaborations with other arts organizations. The year will continue the weekly Minding Motion classes for seniors to improve mind and body, which are held at four Salt Lake County facilities. With only six dancers, Ririe-Woodbury serves and enriches over 50,000 youth and adults through 700+ events on average throughout the State of Utah, as well as national and international tours as a Cultural Ambassador.
