Mission Statement
Thousands of traditional Elders on the Navajo Reservation face hunger and economic insecurity every day. Adopt-A-Native-Elder (A.N.E.) serves to help reduce extreme poverty and hardship facing traditional Elders living on the Navajo Reservation. A.N.E. is a trusted humanitarian organization focused on delivering food, medical supplies, firewood and other forms of Elder support. Respecting the tradition and dignity of Navajo Elders, we create relationships and honor and serve the Elders.
About This Cause
Adopt-A-Native-Elder (A.N.E.) incorporated in 1991 to take food to traditional Elders living below the poverty line in remote areas of the Navajo Reservation in Utah and Arizona. The Program supports Elders who live in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Navajo (Diné) people. Most live in remote portions of the Navajo Reservation. Many live in hogans or simple structures with no running water and some have no electricity. Some raise sheep to sustain themselves and to obtain wool for weaving. When we touch an Elder’s life with the gift of food, we feed their spirits and their hearts. As one Elder said, “Because you bring me food, you wish my life to continue for another day.” We have served thousands of Traditional Elders since the 1990s by giving food as a gift of love… not a handout. Today, our spring and fall Foodruns touch the lives of over 550 Elders. The Giveaway Circle is the Native tradition of giving the best one has : things of value and personal importance that honor the recipient and are given without attachment or expectation of receiving anything in return. How you can help You can be a part of the Giveaway Circle. Through your donations to A.N.E., you can provide food, firewood vouchers, simple medicines, clothing, fabric and yarns for weaving to help these Elders remain in their homes on the land. A.N.E. carries out virtually all of our activities with volunteers. Your gifts to the Giveaway Circle may take the form of time, money, talent or skills. Your donation gifts help provide Elders with everyday necessities like dish soap, shampoo, and towels that the Elders may not be able to afford. Gifts may be small and inexpensive. Gifts like blankets, clothing, or food make a real difference in the Elder’s lives. Adopt An Elder Adopting an Elder is one of the many ways in which you can participate in the Giveaway Circle. A.N.E. is designed to build a bridge between individuals and cultures through opportunities to “adopt” Elders and help provide some of their basic needs. You choose the way that best fits your specific interest and ability to give. When you adopt, you commit to providing your Elder with two sets of Rainbow Food boxes annually. A.N.E. provides and delivers the food. The cost is $100 per set (one set for the spring Foodrun and one set for the fall Foodrun) or $200 per year. If you’re able, additional Elder support is available for Food Runs and support throughout the year. While adoption does not necessarily mean a lifelong commitment, friendships that last a lifetime may develop between the Elders and people who adopt them. CRITICAL NEED: THE GIFT OF FOOD Bashas’ Food Certificates in $25 increments Living in remote locations, it is vitally important that the Elders have an adequate non-perishable food supply. You may purchase food certificates for Elders in need, or you can specify your adopted Elder. Elders can use the certificates at Bashas’ grocery stores on the Reservation. The food certificates are available anytime from A.N.E. in $25 increments. You may order monthly certificates to support an Elder between Foodruns. The certificates may be used only to purchase food and over-the-counter medical items. $100 BUYS A LOAD OF NEEDED FIREWOOD A load of firewood is one of the gifts the Elders appreciate most. Most Elders live in hogans or simple homes heated only with firewood. Many Elders cook over wood. As they get older, gathering firewood becomes more difficult. Most wood must be hauled down from the mountains. During the winter months, many roads are inaccessible. A supply of firewood is vital for the Elders. A.N.E. has arranged to have firewood delivered to the Elders. Each load costs $100. The Elders use 10 loads of firewood each winter for heating and cooking. Your donation towards firewood and food certificates is a tremendous and even a life-saving help. 100% of your firewood and food certificate donations go directly to an Elder.
