Mission Statement

Lewa is a conservation organization in Kenya practicing community conservation where development is a conservation strategy and conservation a development strategy. We protect endangered rhino, elephant, Grevy's zebra and other mammals while supporting 19 schools and managing 4 health clinics serving more than 40,000 people; 800 business have been started through our micro-credit program and black rhino, on the brink of extinction in 2000 have increased in numbers from 300 to more than 1,000 in Kenya with our efforts and those of a small group of other conservationists. We practice environmental sustainability and conservation using low-touch, precautionary principles in our work.

About This Cause

Northern Kenya is one of the last undeveloped areas of sub-saharan Africa and has suitable habitat for Africa's glorious mammals, for her variety of birds and insects. With efforts like ours, wildlife, almost eradicated by 1990, has returned and continues to return to northern Kenya. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy has anchored the area in an ethic of community-based conservation allowing conservation to spark and support development while development upholds the values of conservation. As a model and catalyst for community supported conservation, Lewa set the example for many others - private and group ranch owners - to evolve their lands into conservancies. In what is now almost 7 million contiguous acres of rangeland, wildlife lives alongside pastoralists and the picture of Africa teeming with iconic species is slowly returning to this great savannah. Lewa also supports 19 schools, educating more than 5,000 children each year. Our four clinics address trauma, disease and preventive healthcare for tens of thousands of people how had no previous access to health care. Our water programs are created with community members to provide year-rune access to clean, potable water. Our farming and alternative energy projects offer sustainable means to accomplishing more and improving livelihoods. We work with communities in and around our boundary to bring the benefits of conservation to clusters of villages and towns that are growing - in order to work with people to allow human and other mammalian life to live together in a mutually beneficial circumstance. Lewa is located 3 hours north of Nairobi and within earshot of the majestic Mt. Kenya with which we are incorporated as a World Heritage Site. Our 62,000 acres boasts forrest, rivers and streams, hills, valleys, cliffs and savannah. At any moment 300 elephant move through and across the Conservancy; wild dog race across open plains; klipspringers jump up ravine walls, lions rest lazily, rhino roam and zebra and giraffe munch on forage high and low. Two fat ladies (hippos) wallow in a river pool - and life sparkles. Lewa's conservation team has earned a strong positive reputation for understanding animal behaviors, responding sensitively and weighing challenging alternatives in its efforts to save the endangered black rhino and Grevy's zebra. The balancing of human needs against wildlife needs - flora and fauna and at times one endangered species for another - has been thoughtfully developed over many years so that now other groups look to Lewa for leadership - in translocations, veterinary interventions, land management and human-wildlife conflict resolution.
